E This is CB Winnipeg news good evening thank you for joining us how much time should an MLA spend doing their job Fort Gary MLA Mark wasil is arguing he has time to also work as a lawyer since he wasn’t promoted to Cabinet was silia’s decision to continue practicing isn’t sitting well with his
Party leader with veteran politicians or with a law professor who who suggests it could be a conflict of interest the CBC Zan phrase reports every NDP MLA acknowledged their leader after being officially sworn into wob Cano’s government except for Fort Garry’s Mark wasu who gave canoe the cold
Shoulder that same day on Monday wasu said he wouldn’t quit his law practice as promis instead he’d take on more cases he says he’s got the time because he wasn’t appointed the cabinet the new premier wasn’t impressed I think everyone uh who’s been elected by the people of Manitoba should focus on
Serving the people of Manitoba are you suggesting he would not be doing that if he’s devoting some of his time to his law practice I think all of us uh should understand that public service is more than a full-time job that’s what some former mlas are saying gour Macintosh stopped working as a
Lawyer after his 1993 election it was such an amazing opportunity to serve and to make a difference and I wanted to do the best I could and I just thought that I had to give up the law practice if I was going to give it my all while wasu
Has worked as an MLA and criminal defense lawyer for a few years now he’s a member of government arguing against Crown Attorneys employed by his government even if no conflict of interest rules are broken a law professor is worried I’m always concerned about does the public trust and perceive that that lawyers are
Acting ethically and even if the Law Society is correct that it’s not a concern for them I would with much respect suggest that maybe it should be or it might be in the future wasili has declined our interview requests the NDP hasn’t answered our questions as for Premier canoe he’s done talking about
This I’ve made my comments on the matter veteran political Observer Paul Thomas is encouraging the two men to patch up their differences he says it’ll probably be a good move for both of them Ian phase CBC News Winnipeg Winnipeg’s mayor believes making the entire downtown safer will

McLean CBC News Winnipeg two lawyers have been banned from practicing law in Canada for three years after they hired a private investigator to follow a judge who was presiding over one of their cases the cbc’s Caitlyn Golick was in the courtroom this morning unprofessional unethical and dishonorable that’s how a judge

Concerned about its efficacy the lawyers say their clients are relieved to put an end to The Saga one today’s judge described as extraordinary Caitlyn golock CBC News Winnipeg a Fifth Estate investigation has found that genealogical records and historical research contradict Buffy St Marie’s claim that she’s a cre woman
From Saskatchewan for decades the celebrated singer songwriter has said she is a cre woman born in Saskatchewan but as Jeff Leo reports some of her own family members are now casting doubt on that claim Buffy St Marie is considered one of North America’s most famous indigenous people she started her career
Way back in the 1960s as a folk singer in New York City playing alongside the likes of Bob Dylan Leonard Cohen Joanie Mitchell and her songs became Anthems for both War protesters and also for Advocates of indigenous rights now claims about her ancestry they’ve shifted over the years from Al gonin and
Migma uh early on in her career eventually claims that she was cre she’s also said that she was born on the piapot first nation which is just North of Regina in Saskatchewan in the early 1940s and then her story goes she was adopted as an infant by an American
Couple uh Albert and Winford Santa Maria and they raised her in Massachusetts uh and finally her story says that in her early 20s she was reunited with her pipot relatives and adopted into the pipot family now I spoke with her niece Heidi St Marie and she says that story
Is an elaborate fabrication she says in fact Buffy St Marie is of Italian and English ancestry and was born in stonum Massachusetts I mean she’s clearly born in the United States she’s clearly not indigenous or Native American she wasn’t born in Canada now cbc’s investigation actually uncovered Buffy St Marie’s
Birth certificate and it confirms that she was born February 20th 1941 in stonea Massachusetts we’ve asked her for an interview about this but she’s declined our request in a letter her lawyer suggested that this birth certificate may not in fact be real the lawyer also says that at no point has
Buffy misrepresented her ancestry or any details about herself Jeff Leo CBC News Toronto you can watch the fifth Estates investigation making an icon streams on YouTube tonight on CBC television at 900 p.m. you can also watch it anytime on CBC Gem well thanks Janet yeah after a couple of days of the snow sort of just melting in the Winnipeg area boy things definitely were a slushy and wet Winter Wonderland today but that doesn’t mean it can’t be beautiful grabbing this shot in downtown Winnipeg this morning and it
Uh sort of looks like a postcard if you just ignore the fact that it’s only October 27th but Winnipeg uh by and large I think 10 cm is kind of the average of what we ended up with thanks to these volunteer reports and uh even east of the city getting some heavier
Amounts around pinawa 15 cm and even into Northwestern Ontario that system affecting you folks too around 12 in canora heaviest bands of snow were moving through overnight last night and you’ll see that as the radar kind of resets here and really through all the Red River Valley these heavy bands kind
Of in the wee hours of the morning but by and large now this system has moved out but we still have seen kind of a few snow showers at times this afternoon in the Winnipeg area but I think after we kind of get through this evening we’re
Going to be seeing that diminishing what our attention turns to now though is lake effect snow uh in the Inner Lake Region and some snow squalls that are possible as as we head through tomorrow and even tonight we could see that at times but for Winnipeg and and portions
Of Southern Manitoba I think we actually will get some clearing as we head through tomorrow that’ll be shortlived though as uh some flurries and cloud cover starts building back in as we head through Sunday and that’s in preparation for our next weather maker this low pressure system moving in from the north
Which will bring snow across pretty much all of the province and in terms of amounts this system kind of or this uh model I should say times out around 3:00 Monday and there could be some more snow later in the afternoon in Winnipeg and Southern Manitoba but again that Lake
Affects snow along Eastern sections of the Lakes could bring 20 to maybe 30 cm of snow and with winds picking up a little bit there could be some visibility issues with that snow especially in Western sections of the province uh as we head into Monday now the forecast for tonight in Winnipeg
Calling for minus 4 with some scattered flurries after a little bit of cloud cover but again clearing out by the time we hit the morning morning hours it’ll be a chilly start to the day though keep in mind with the winds this – 6 probably going to feel into kind of- 10 to-5
Territory and not a whole lot of improvement as we head toward the afternoon temperature- wise but that sun sticks around that goes away though as we head through the next couple of days again Sunday probably increasing cloudiness and then Monday I put 2 to 4 centimet here so far and maybe a little
Bit more snowfall as we head Monday into Tuesday your full provincial forecast Janet is coming up in a little bit Evan Williams thank you very much if you’ve been watching CBC news for a long time you may remember that when I joined the team here at CBC Winnipeg news there were two reporters
Named wob one of them is now our Premier and the other one’s a best-selling novelist who’s sitting right beside me now W gisha rice welcome home thanks Janet it’s good to be back in one of my homes one of your homes right cuz you lived here for how long four years four
Glorious years you know I was just reflecting uh with with Rory here and it you know those were four impactful years you know four big ones in in my life and I always reflect very Finly on my time here in Winnipeg for sure well what’s it like coming back now you’re in the
Middle of a of a tour for your latest novel yeah follow up why didn’t you initially want to write this like your your fans of moon of the crusted snow uh kind of forced you to write this they push and push and push and said we want
A sequel yeah more or less but you didn’t want to do it at first why not um I just didn’t have the idea you know didn’t really think it needed an extra bit of story you know I was satisfied with what i’ had written and the conclusion that was reached in the first
Book uh and that’s not to say that I didn’t want to I just didn’t plan on it you know it just wasn’t there for me but thankfully you know I had some wonderful readers everywhere including here in Winnipeg and across Manitoba who were very supportive very encouraging and you
Got to give the people what they want right so well what does it feel like though to to be here now and not be here as a reporter and not just on a visit senior friends but you’re going to go to MCN Robinson tonight sit there with Rosanna dearch child great friend of
Both of ours and speak as authors about being an author yeah it’s cool it’s cool you know I consider it all part of a really rewarding Journey for me like I was hugely supported when I was here you know and I worked as a journalist primarily doing the general news every
Day and you know when I’d go back to my apartment in Osborne Village in the evening that’s when I’d try to write my little stories you know little stories and uh I would share that with people here colleagues like you and you know people were you know very supportive
They thought you know if you want to pursue that just keep at it and uh so to be back here with like an actual novel is is is wild no doubt but it’s really really uh fun and you actually went from here to work with CBC in Ontario you
Were hosting a a morning radio show yes afternoon after even better because you didn’t have to get up early exactly awesome Best of Both Worlds and then in June 2020 you take the leap and leave to be a full-time author yeah that’s a very brave move like how scary was that
Decision uh the prospect originally was scary because it’s giving up a full-time job at you know a hallowed Canadian institution where I had a really fulfilling career you know but it wasn’t a spontaneous decision at all my wife and I had talked it through for probably about six months before it happened I
Figured you’re not going to go home and go guess what honey I know we got you know Young children to feed and everything but uh yeah wow yeah so it took some planning you know um I had the contract in place to write Moon of the turning leaves and I knew like that
Wasn’t enough to sustain you know uh supporting a family um so I looked up what else I could do for work and you know made those plans and had everything lined up by the time I left uh in in the late spring of 2020 so what else are you
Doing besides writing um doing a lot of school visits uh talking to students about writing storytelling about journalism here in there too uh do some workshops with other writers um I do the occasional freelance journalism um mostly in print and online uh but also I do some Consulting too you know when it
Comes to representation in media in literature um Equity diversity inclusion you know the the three letters that we’re all familiar with I do a little bit of that advising here and there so yeah it’s kind of a mixed bag of things that I do on the side from writing
Fiction but it’s I’m thinking it must feel good all that stuff all that school stuff one of the the stories you covered when you was were here was when our former prime minister stood up in the House of Commons and apologized for residential schools and you were with
Survivors here that day um we’ve seen so much happen in terms of a reckoning and in terms of truth-telling since then what has this period of time been like for you as an an a schic man oh well you know when I think back to that moment 15
Years ago uh in covering that it really was the highlight of my journalism career being able to just cover that moment of the apology down here at the Rison in that great big ballroom with survivors and in the years after seeing survivors get up in public give their
Testimony to rooms full of people where it was recorded on camera and everything and then we would report it and send it out to the rest of the country I was just so in awe of their bravery and it really gave me hope because it reminded me that despite everything that those
People went through you know they held out hope that one day the truth would come out and they’d be able to finally be their true selves you know and that’s sort of the inspiration I draw from a lot of indigenous communities um that um have the privilege of visiting or coming
In contact with and I try to capture that in fiction now too so yeah resilience yeah I mean that’s a theme of your books of your novels hope for the future and your three beautiful kids yeah and you know if I if I can’t have hope uh you know without kids you know
Like they’re they’re what I look to the the future for you know so yeah cuz the Toronto Maple Leafs don’t necessarily give you a lot of hope that’s that’s a lessons a lesson in resilience too though being a fan of the leaps right so congratulations my friend thank you for

Announced yesterday a pause of the carbon tax on home heating oil for three years a move that largely helps those in Atlantic Canada cbc’s Kate McKenna has this report Justin Trudeau is in total panic mode Pier POV is turning up the heat on the Trudeau liberals what caused Justin Trudeau to freak out
Yesterday and hold a sudden press conference to announce that he was going to pause the carbon tax on home heating oil the answer is that he was plummeting in the poles amazing at Atlantic MPS Justin Trudeau and his Atlantic team announced a three-year pause on the cost of home
Heating oil an extra rebate for Rural Canadians and incentives for heat pumps it’s a Backtrack on the government’s carbon tax aimed at making life cheaper for people on the East Coast speaking to Chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton Alberta’s Finance Minister says that’s just not fair it’s time that our
Federal leadership U admits that uh the retail carbon tax is an abysmal failure I’m very very happy for for my Atlantic cousins but um you know I I certainly think it’s unfair he’s not alone when will the NDP liberal government admit that their carbon tax is punishing albertans and ax the entire carbon
Tax but Canada’s environment Minister says the goal of this change is to give Atlantic Canadians time to get off oil by buying heat pumps of course as environment Minister my preference would be to to to to not have to make those accommodation but but we live in a world
Where some people are challenged with affordability right now and we have to be able to course correct on on on some of our measures some environmental Advocates say that plan might backfire because the government has sent a signal that the carbon tax won’t be applied equally it undermines The credibility of Canada’s
Carbon pricing the federal environment Minister says this decision is pragmatic not political he also says there won’t be any additional concessions for other provinces Kate McKenna CBC News Ottawa Air Canada is reaching out to some passengers offering to settle their compensation cases the Canadian Transportation industry has a backlog of
More than 61,000 complaints cases that could take more than 18 months to resolve but some people say what the airlines offering feels like a raw deal the CBC Sophia Harris reports after Air Canada rejected Samantha Smith’s compensation claim she took her case to the Canadian Transportation agency but it’s stuck in
A big backlog the wait time between when you submitted your case and when it is reviewed can be more than 18 months so she was hopeful when Air Canada sent her this email it mentioned the long wait there is a significant backlog of cases before the CTA at this time and it
Offered to settle her case now the offer $225 or a $400 Tri travel voucher that’s in addition to a $700 voucher already offered but Smith believes she’s owed more than $1,400 in cash for an overnight flight delay $225 doesn’t even cover my out-of pocket expenses just for the hotel room and so
These alternative offers in my view are a way to try and pressure people into accepting less than what they deserve CBC News spoke with five passengers who said Air Canada offered them less than what they believe the Ro even so two said they agreed to a settlement rather
Than wait out the CTA backlog it’s really kind of unconscionable this consumer rights Advocate says Air Canada shouldn’t meddle in the CTA process this an abusive use of an offer to try to get consumers to agree to something just because there’s delays and they might be desperate to get their money back under
Federal rules Airlines must pay up to $1,000 for lengthy flight delays Plus cover accommodation if the airline is at fault Air Canada says it pays full compensation for valid claims and as offering different negotiable deals to wrap up claims it deems invalid it’s just more convenient this professor says
Settling claims informally is more efficient than battling it out at the CTA Air Canada in this case would have to have you know people designated to actually respond make arguments as for Smith she didn’t accept our Canada’s offer and plans to endure the weight to try to get the compensation she feels
She deserves Sophia Harris CBC News Toronto your recycled clothes aren’t as green as you might think marketplaces latest investigation has found some clothes being marketed and sold as sustainable or anything but charlese Agro has the story Fashion’s top Trend this season sustainability made a 79% % recycled polyester these are 100% recycled
Polyester Marketplace found recycled polyester products selling at top retailers across the country this is 100% recycled poly the website actually says you’re buying this and it’s better for the earth oh my God this sustainable fashion expert says there’s a big problem with the Recycled polyester some of Fashion’s big brands are pushing
Recycled polyester isn’t made from old clothes at all most of it is made from used plastic bottles you’re using plastic bottles um you’re actually taking bottles out of a potentially closed loop recycling system and then giving them a one-way ticket to landfill disposal Canadians generate about 500
Million kilg of textile waste every year that’s enough to fill about 15,000 trucks like that scientists returned Advocate Linda Greer says turning plastic bottles into clothes won’t help make a dent in the mountains of fashion waste the world produces each year what we really need is we need to go clothing to clothing
Recycling currently less than 1% of the world’s fashion waste is recycled in the truest sense of the word it takes time and is expensive so just to be clear no one is is actually taking old clothes and turning them into new ones no one is doing clothing recycling at scale
Definitely H&M the Gap and Lululemon all told Marketplace they’re exploring new technologies and that more work needs to be done to find truly Sustainable Solutions until then Linda has a simple one I mean the good solution is we need to buy less clothes Charles seagro CBC News Toronto for the full investigation watch

Explains it doesn’t look like much yet Pavilion is coming come about right over there but this Calgary rooftop is set to transform with a famous American designer at the helm Maya Lynn designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC now she’s taking on her first Canadian project designing a new
Terrace at the gleno Museum one of her goals to represent the Prairies in architecture what I’m doing on the rooftop is welcoming you to the sky and the Prairie as well so hopefully you’ll be able to connect to kind of the the larger idea of where is Calgary situated
In of course visiting the site during winter also represents the Prairies coming out here in the middle of winter or it’s actually the beginning of winter helps really substantiate my goal to make something that is used physically in the warmer months but is equally something that when you’re inside the
Pavilion looking out or from the cafe that you get to enjoy it as well this project is part of a multi-million dollar investment Lynn’s work will help repurpose a 50-year old Building Museum leaders say that was how they drew the designer in we’re taking old commercial and Civic architecture and saying let’s
Make this new again but without knocking it down let’s find the value in that old building and refresh it so that it’s a place that we want to spend time today and those are the values that attracted her to Calgary and I think you want to
Lead by example so I think think that the gleno committed to um recycling basically their existing Museum admission will be free to both the museum and the rooftop with both outdoor and indoor spaces the projects should be done by 2026 anise hiari CBC News Calgary coming up just in time to escape

Because we didn’t have an inclusive community space like this for skateboarding BMX roller skating scootering um before this place so it’s incredibly important for mental health and keeping kids and people of all ages active Okay what has skateboarding done for you skateboarding has brought me all my
Best friends and my fiance and it has significantly improved my mental health and it’s kept me active Okay so one of the biggest things about being here is teaching people maybe like me how to skateboard and being conclusionary so what what should I remember when I try

We’ve really been stuck in sort of this pattern of Cloudy Skies and getting into these cooler temperatures here and that’s thanks to this big diving trough in the upper atmosphere that’s part of the reason anyway and that really is not going anywhere over these next few days
This Ridge of warmer air out to the West slowly making its way Eastward I don’t think it’ll be here in time for Halloween though for the trick-or-treaters things going to be probably below freezing for those folks in terms of tonight’s forecast in Northwestern Ontario we could see a
Couple of centimeters of snow in around areas like canor and Fort Francis but the further north you go I think the less of a chance there is there moving into Southeastern Manitoba including Winnipeg again it’s going to be a bit of a chilly night with lows down around
Minus 8 a little bit of wind going to make that feel in the minus5 range and if you’re again along the Inner Lake especially Eastern sections of the lake around baren River and east of gimle we could be seeing 5 cm or 10 cm with those snow squalls overnight tonight coldest
Temperatures in the province though probably in the southwest and along the Parkland region down aroundus 10 wind chills close to minus 20 in some spots and some warmer temperatures as you go north in the province and by and large uh kind of partly to mostly cloudy skies
A little bit warmer Eastward Island Lake Norway house sitting at not too bad around minus 5 by the time we get into tomorrow those temperatures in those areas actually could be above the freezing Mark tomorrow and you go a little bit further north and west I think areas like Lin Lake probably have
The best chance of seeing some snowfall tomorrow uh into West man and Southwestern Manitoba Brandon area I think we’re looking for highs generally in the freezing to minus5 range we could see a few stray flurries in the Parkland region but I think uh for the rest of us
Going to be escaping that and again the heaviest of the snow up along the lake could be upwards of 20 cm there with those snow squalls that are moving in but for Winnipeg we will get some sunshine tomorrow albeit these areas a little bit on the Breezy side some
Southwest winds though going to help uh bring out the cloud and bring in the sunshine for Northwestern Ontario may not be enough for you folks especially in around canor and Fort Francis temperatures nice but you’re going to kind of be sitting in that minus 2us one range and maybe getting just above the

Started last August when a bat flew in the living room that’s when I called the exterminators all over the province and they couldn’t like they just said good luck you know they’re protected there’s nothing that we can do about the ministry of environment says the bats are listed as endangered species
This University of Regina Professor has studied bats for 40 years and says they are in trouble due to a disease called white nose syndrome is it interferes with this species ability to hibernate uh it seems to cause it to lose more water than it would in most situations
Um and uh that is fatal to these bats most of the time because it’s illegal to or disturb the bats without a permit the family took a different approach last winter you can see every little divot is filled with silicone now sealing holes in the roof and installing
Bat cones which allow the creatures to leave but not come back but in the spring they found another bat in the kitchen aquarium and six more in a mouse stap so the family has had to take Health precautions as well getting regular rabies shots they’ve also reach
Outed the government for help but that hasn’t solved anything the federal government government has protected the species but we’re not protected the only option left for the couple is to remove the entire roof but that would cost them up to 100 Grand and then some more to
Get the bats relocated and no insurance will cover it they have thought of moving as well but the bats have made their home hard to sell so for now they are in limbo we have the bats for life I guess we’re going to die here with them brsh CBC News
