Practice today uh the first of which after that big 8-1 loss in Arizona and much like the practice before the Vegas game very uh intense lots of board battles we saw ree Johnson and Isaac Phillips get into it during a drill nothing to carried over but uh guys are
Feisty guys are fired up I think there’s a lot of guys who are really upset about the way that game went so it’s good to see what we saw today I think yes you were hoping you’d see a little of that we saw a little of that about a week ago
Before they left on that road trip after the uh you know the Boston game uh so but they got three more days before the next game they’re not going to be on the ice tomorrow right but they are going to be doing like a a weit room day and a
Video session day so I’m sure there’s lots of video clips uh that they’re going to show them and um this is what we’re going to hear from Nick Felino but he said this is how you get better it’s the repetitiveness at practice and eventually it translates into the game
So we’ll see uh tough weekend ahead yeah with uh the Panthers uh here on Saturday for our take over sold out uh and those of you who are coming to the Takeover you if you haven’t gotten something in your inbox yet you’re going to get it at some
Point today with all the information on meeting times and tickets and all that fun stuff uh but the Panthers and then the New Jersey Devils uh the following night so no big deal get the get that hard practice in now you’re going to need you’re going to need it so the bit
Of news we have from practice before we hear from Luke Richardson uh Taylor Hall was on the ice before practice uh seems like potentially he could play this weekend maybe one of the two games uh you’ll get a little more clarity on that from Luke Richardson but the biggest
Thing is Lucas reel spending some time on the wing in this one and uh a thanu centering him and Taylor radish now reel was also doing some things at Center early in practice so I don’t think the plug is completely pulled on reel um but you know with hul out like we talked
About in the last postgame show it might be time to see what you can get out of reel offensively keep that confidence up cuz he spoke today uh we didn’t have great audio quality on it so we can’t play it but he’s getting a little frustrated he says he’s kind of pissed
About his production and he wants to get it going yeah I mean it’s something that we’ve all been focusing on uh since the beginning of the year is is how is reel going to look and so far by my eyes he has not looked like the same player that
We saw in in different uh stints last season and what we’ve seen in in Rockford even though he’s played center in Rockford before even though he played center uh when he was in Germany when he was originally drafted playing it at the NHL level is completely different and
He’s had good flashes of those responsibilities at Center he’s been winning some faceoffs in in recent games it’s been uh around the 50% marker higher uh defensive responsibilities have been better um but it takes time to naturally progress to being an NHL Center uh where he’s played the best is at wing
And I think a lot of people uh myself included have said let’s give Center some time but the first seven eight games of this season he’s he’s a he’s a shell of what we what we believe Lucas reel can be so I’m under the impression that this is now a directive of like
Let’s slowly transition him back to wing and see what happens see if the production can come see if maybe taking some of that responsibility away from him uh as a centerman to be more uh involved defensively and to be deeper in the offensive zone because of it take
That away from him let him go to the wing where it seems like his offensive creativity and his ability to read plays is a little bit easier to do uh and the defensive responsibilities are less on his shoulders I think that’s all going to Bod well for him it’s interesting too
Because if you remember last year after all the trade are made and everybody was gone they moved athu to Center yeah and Luke Richardson said this suits him pretty well he’s able to use his speed in different ways playing Center and he adapted to it very quickly and probably
Played his best hockey of the year playing Center last year and while Luke didn’t mention specifically that when he spoke today and again you’re going to hear from him in a moment that aoso element of getting him going a little bit too is important yeah and I seeed
There’s people in the chat I know Wy City hockey said so like just keep a thanu benched this team is desperate for offense and putting ree Johnson in there or putting uh Boris kachuk in there Mackenzie Atwell or who or whoever it might be isn’t going to solve the offensive
Problems you need to get aosu going you need to get reel going so maybe this is a way to get both of them going again and reel talked today about his defensive play and said like he he feels like it’s getting better he feels like it’s getting easier the center part of
The game but he is a little bit you know and remember English is a second language for him so things maybe get lost in translation a little bit but he did say he’s a little bit pissed about his production like he wants it to get better he has high expectations for
Himself so hopefully this can be used to jump start both guys but it didn’t sound like the experiment with Reich Center is over over I didn’t get that impression no and said we’ll hear from luk even said like probably going to switch him back at some point yeah I think they
Just want him to get some points get some confidence back and and I’ve I’ve said it the last few postgame shows he needs that first goal I think once he gets that first goal he’s going to take a deep breath and go oh that’s right I
Know how to do this yeah and now I’m going to get a little more confidence there um all the other aspects of playing Center have been fine probably better than expected you know got off to a little rough start but it it’s improved uh he’s winning faceoffs he’s he’s
Playing better defensively and I think he’s so focused on that aspect of playing Center yeah that it’s taken away from him just being that instinctual offensive threat that we know he can be he wasn’t drafted where he was drafted to be a defensive-minded center he was drafted to be a dynamic offensive
Generator and if that means play him on the wing play him on the wing like give him give him some time there I know people want him up with Bard right away but you know this is the first step I’m sure you’ll see that at some point but I
See why they’re going to try him on that that second line still keep him on the second line with that uh on the wing as opposed to jumping up because if he gets going on that second line when Anon to see you at Center then you have two
Lines that could actually score a game b instead of just that’s the right if we put we know if we put Reichel with Bard that would probably get be a really good combination but then that’s the one line teams have to focus on where if we can
Get Riel going away from Bard all of a sudden that’s two lines other teams have to worry about okay who we sending our top pair against Bard or Reichel all right why don’t we take our first break and on the other side of that you’ll hear from Luke Richardson after practice

Hall so that’s where uh this press conference starts here’s Luke Richardson You’ been skating for a bit or was this at first day uh I think first day of skating he’s been working out of the gym and feeling better so uh I think he even asked to kind of progress to the battle
Drills but uh we’re not going to skate tomorrow we’re going to have a gym day and uh um a little bit more of meeting and video stuff and then get back on the ice Friday so we’re hoping that he’ll uh um either skate tomorrow uh for another
Test and try it with us or just do the gym day with the guys and try it with us on Friday and see how it goes encouraging I what is yeah yeah no I think he said he’s feeling much better and uh so that that’s really encouraging
And he’s uh even the first time he came back he’s kind of been pushing to come back so uh uh you know it’s good like we don’t want them playing hurt but we want guys showing that they can push through some stuff and and when it’s not uh you
Know detrimental to worse injury what’s the status of classic um I think uh you know he’s making a stages through the concussion protocol so um I don’t think he’s quite at the stage where he goes to the neuros site people to get tested yet but I think he’s getting close so I
Think there was some good signs that he’s said light activity and responded really well so now it’s to ramp it up a bit luk last time you were here after your last home game you were pretty upset about how the guys played I you had a great game in Vegas then what
Happened in Arizona I you could have lost your cool in Arizona obviously after a game like that but you know you didn’t for obvious reasons is there something at this point where you’re as a coach have to say this team is going to be inconsistent just based on how on
Like a third of your lineup less than 50 nhal games you experience yeah as much as X’s and O’s are important I think the consistency level and the performance level has to be better and that’s why I talked about that right before the season started and the message to the
Guys then and and continues to be that and you know we are going to grow and uh but sometimes you know we’ll have a fall back uh and I think in 82 games everybody does and I like to see how we respond after that so I’m looking forward to another good response and
Then hopefully have those pauses those down pauses further and further away from each other and uh you know I I I wasn’t really I thought we had a really good first per it’s hard to say that but I thought we got first we we wanted to
Jump on a team that was maybe fragile at the end of their game that they they blew a 4-1 lead and I thought our game game plan was great we executed early uh I I thought we were a little bit sloppy on their first goal but uh again we had
A couple followup deep ozone Faceoff shifts and uh I thought you know Connor and Nick and um uh Kersey were really good in the first period had some great uh offensive zone time and unfortunately we did I think we just missed on um a nice for check and then a chance by uh
Donado and it was kind of like an open net and he might have just got a bit of a not a hook but I think a push or something right when he shot it so we missed that one and we had a shot from the point and Dickinson almost got one
Or it might have been Felino in the back door and then you know unfortunately there were you know Seth kind of got tripped up in the corner that you know was might have been missed but it was in our net 2 seconds later and then uh you know it
Was a unfortunate um incident when Mur went back behind the net fell and he took guy’s legs out so they called that and then they scored the power play so bang it’s 3-1 and I thought we had a first a pretty good first period on the road unfortunately I think that’s when
It was like you know maybe 5 minutes into the second period we got off our game plan and that’s where the immaturity of us as a team showed and that’s where we got to get stronger we got to stick with it it’s only 3-1 and we had some uh really good chances in
The first period we can’t uh break away from the game plan and when we did then that’s when we gave them we gave them opportunities they didn’t seem to miss on any of them so that’s when uh things kind of racked up on us when you have a
Ting like soda Bloom P do do you believe or you and Jimmy way believe in throwing her right back out there um to show confidence yeah uh I I don’t think he had a poor game like you know could he steal the game he he still had one or
Two back door play stops in the first period um but um not one kind of went through him or trickle across the line there was no poor goals but on our goalie it was just kind of us putting him in a tough spot so uh we would have
Liked to get him out of the game and maybe a little bit earlier but then uh you know with Peter and his you know I want to give him a bit of a heads up up so I gave him a a shift or two to give
Him a nod and he started to stretch and warm up and get his equipment ready and then we took a penal so I don’t want to put a goalie in there on a on a penalty kill situation where he’s going to have to rip across the crease and make a back
Door save stone cold so and then unfortunately and then I gave him one more shift after that uh just to kind of get ready and then one more bounces in on off a guy skate so you know it was unfortunate that we left him in too long
And should he shouldn’t have been in there that long not by his play just by getting goalie out of there you don’t want to Shell Shock them because we’re not playing great in front of him at that point so but today in practice he was excellent practice today I don’t
Think he’s phased by it and uh we have confidence in him to go right back in so he’ll be in this weekend when we make our decision we’ll probably split those games with Peter and and sod and that’s the that was our game plan from the beginning of the year what’s the thought
Process moving right for the the wing um we might even move him back it’s just on maybe Taylor coming back or so we just thought we’d try him there and see what looked like with double A playing in the middle again I thought able a looked
Pretty good in the middle at times last game when he got some chance there so just so you know I’m me trying to figure out what’s going to look the best I thought uh you know Conor’s line looked really good uh tried a little different thing in the third period just to you
Know put reel on the on the wing for a bit but um I think they looked okay but uh I just wanted to go back to what worked for us last game and then maybe figure out what works underneath plus we got the home change we want to put a line together like
Florida we want to make sure we have a proper line that’s going to play against barkov’s line and then we can get our you know more offensive guys maybe out there against somewhere down their lineup and on offensive zone changes or line matching like that rles seem to
Have more odd man rushes you know last season is there anything you can you’ve seen differently in there uh no you know what he’s he’s just just hasn’t found the back of the net for him yet I thought he’s he had some good speed over the last couple games and he’s playing
Pretty responsible defensively and I don’t think that’s taken away from his offense I thought he had a really good offensive zone shift in the second period where he came down the middle and got a great chance I think it hit the goalie again we’ve hit the goalie more
In the elbows squeezing against her chest this year than anybody so you know and it was quick I think it just hit the goalie more than he missed his shot so you know he as long as he continues to stay positive and working hard like he is he’s going to have a breakthrough
Game and I don’t think it matters really where he plays on the wing or uh at Center I thought again on the wing in the third period he made a really nice play coming out of his Zone to Conor uh off the wall so he’s he’s comfortable around the
Walls as he is skating through the middle so uh we just hopefully need a little luck on his side to get on the scoreboard Michael said he was frustrated with this production how do you give him the positive encouragement to kind of stay with it while also
Expecting more from him yeah no just letting him realize it is you know the NHL and and production is a reality but um also just like your first comments like we have to just kind of reinforce the good play I’m going to meet with him after after this and show him some of
The good clips that he had last game of speed uh you know he had a good dzone clip where he he hit and pin pinned a guy in our Zone someone else scooped the pocket and Kaiser and then they took off on the offense sometimes creating offenses means good defense as well so
Otherwise you’ll never have the PO and chased around the whole shift so I think for him to realize his whole game is it’s growing even though his production’s not on the sheet and he’s just got a he’s the one that’s playing though we can only encourage him and try
And give him the right game plan that’ll work for him and our team and then if he can stay positive and and stay fresh he’s a young guy he’s got to roll through these ups and downs uh he know I think he has to know that we believe in
Him but uh then he’s the one that has to step on the ice and do it WR You’ seen in kinsky game and have you had any talk to the front office as he approaches you know the 10 game part yeah no uh we haven’t really talked about it much I
Think you know I know Bling’s down and out and uh but I think he’s played great so probably no conversation me he’s probably not going anywhere but uh uh you know he’s he’s playing with confidence I think that first goal the other night I was yelling shoot off the
Bench and all the players turned around laughed when he made a great play but he can make those offensive plays I think defense ly he’s uh you know working with Kevin Dean a lot and uh he’s growing he’s he’s getting better defensively and it’s a tough League to play defense in
But offensively he’s got the the natural characteristics of the young players nowadays he skates well he sees the ice Well we’d like to see him shoot the puck a little bit more and we promote that to him every day especially on the power play and I think he’s starting to get
That a little bit and once um I think once he gets his confidence going offensively I think you’ll see a lot more production out of him as well Conor get more comfortable with with the game maybe the the speed and physicality but how have you seen him get more
Comfortable with the NHL level as the games have going on yeah I think so I think figuring it out and once he goes one time through kind of you know he’ll start to see a lot of the types of teams he’s getting and and the types of
Matchups he’s going to get on the road compared to at home we can they’re going to still try and do it but we can maybe get him away from a little bit uh but I don’t think he really cares about matchups I think he just wants to go
Play I think he he thinks and he has confidence he can beat anybody uh at a one1 and you might be right so um it’s just got to be sometimes in the right area when he’s not standing still in the blue line or blue lines it be more of a
Speed we’ve showed him that a little bit and I think he’s starting to show that in the games as well he’s couple Crossovers and really building his speed before he gets the puck and I think that’s creating uh a lot more time with the puck especially in the O Zone that
Uh I think he’s figuring it out really quick you uh told what happen to you drew back in that you want to see uh more determination do you feel like you’ve seen that particular on defense yeah I thought last game I I know he was on for two goals in the first period
Against not really his fault it just happened to be out there and and that that’s the way it goes sometimes when you’re a player that’s it’s not you know going 100% your way um or in and out of the lineup you feel like everything’s closing in on you when it when you’re
Out there but I thought I saw some way more speed way more offense last game uh without him really giving up any defensive uh lapses or liability so I think for him you know what I mean just like same thing he had a really a couple
Nice assists this year but I like to see him shooting the Pucket a little bit more as well I know he had one kind of two-on-one that he probably could have taken it right to the far side of the net uh as the DB backed out of outside
The post uh but he went chose to go to his backand on the short side in the second period there and the goalie made a good save so he’s getting he got he got some really nice opportunities last game for himself and he created one for
An whistle and radish that went off the knob and the goie stick so again it’s another case of where he created some really good events out there but nothing good on the scoreboard so I know it’s frustrating for players especially offensive players but uh we have to have
A little bit of patience I think we’ve had uh some really good games this year against some top teams uh now we have to work on the consistency level that we talked about from day one and that’s individually and that’s as a team too that’s goal though isn’t he he’s not
Supposed to pinch in that tight is he that leaves the back side guy open for a rebound on on yeah I think what it was is we missed kind of an assignment there so he’s worried about that guy so he he probably creeps a little bit if you look
At the video a little bit before he looks and turns sees three on the backside but then he’s worried as the lefties in front of the net for a quick one timer which he did get off and it went off the Goldie’s pad right to number three so you’re helping that’s
What happens when we’re not maybe in trust trust uh with all of our teammates doing their jobs that you start to do someone else’s job then your job’s going to suffer that’s what happened on that that is Luke Richardson from Hawks practice today I mean there’s so much
Good crap in there it’s like every time the guy talks I learn something new and uh the last point he made about a thanu and props to John Deets for like calling out a specific play and asking like hey what happened on that cuz you know
Luke’s happy to tell you MH and that mentioning of trust right that a thanu looked over his shoulder and saw uhoh something bad’s got to happen so I need to I need to go cover someone else’s man and ended up in the back of his net that
Trust thing that’s going to grow as the season goes on too because yeah there’s a few guys here from last year but mostly it’s a pretty new roster of players and these guys have to learn each other’s Tendencies young players need to learn the system need to learn
Where they’re going to be so you might watch that play and say look at that athu made a mistake and ultimately he did but he was probably in his mind covering for someone else’s so we talk about the speed of the game all the time that’s another part of it where you got
To know where your teammates are going to be you got to trust that they’re going to be there and if they’re not you just got to do what you’re supposed to do it’s a it’s a very tough sport we Ed the pinball analogy all the time and
That’s a great example of he takes one look and sees oh God there’s three guys on one side here what am I going to do and he makes the wrong decision the the right intention was there he’s trying to do the right thing he’s not just coasting or doing his own thing
He’s like like what’s the lesser of three evils here and that’s what he chose and it didn’t work out so um it’s interesting a major trickle down effect when one guy gets out of position somebody then tries to go cover that spot leaving his spot open then somebody
Like it just it can Avalanche and snowball real quick and then all of a sudden it’s 8 to one right right yeah yeah I mean I I I think there’s with the shifting of of lines and and assignments and everything and and you know the roster turnover that you mentioned there
Is still time for things to have to gel together this this isn’t a finished product of a team seven games eight games into the season so it’s still going to going to take some time and and I think that’s probably part of the reason Richardson was has been
Frustrated shown some frustration in the last couple of days is that like okay like we had all these things in place last year we had like a good you know good team chemistry good team culture going on now it’s kind of like okay we have to retool things and kind of find
That again it didn’t carry over as much from last year to this year as maybe uh would have liked it to but that comes with roster turnover so there’s still plenty of time in the season for that to come back together and for the team to
Kind of get back to where we saw them last year again it’s not talented it’s not a very talented roster but a lot of times being sound in your assignments and outworking teams can get you further than just pure talent alone yeah and some of it might have to be to do with
Maybe there’s more security within this locker room where last year yeah you had guys like Max doy and Sam lafer did that were maximum effort guys and but those were guys that knew knew they were probably on a season long audition for a contender to come calling you know guys
Like Jake mccab of course Patrick like basically everybody that was going to get traded and you don’t really don’t have those type of guys in this locker room so you don’t have guys that are like well I’ve got to you know and I’m not saying that this is the reason you
Lose eight to one there’s a lot of reasons but you don’t have as many you have guys that have two-year Deals threeyear Deals where they’re not you know trying to open up eyes of Scouts and from other teams to say hey pick me for your playoff run and that might have
Something to do with more of the you know sometimes secure guys can be you know take a night off here or there because they’re not yeah uh they don’t have that that fire lit under them well I think it’s interesting too that despite being down three to one after
The first period he said they played a pretty good period and you had Jones pulled down which he referenced and no call ends up in a goal then Murphy falls down and a guy takes a guy’s leg out and that gets called a penalty and all of a
Sudden it’s 3-1 every year there’s always a game that goes that the way that Arizona game went where it just oh my God everything you do ends up in your net it hits every stick it hits every post like everything just goes against you but I think it it felt Amplified
Coming off that Vegas game and even that aside that yeah you know take that ball game ball it up and throw it away they played differently against Vegas they knew this kind of your point that if they make a mistake against Vegas they’re going to get scored on if they
Take their foot off the G against Vegas they’re going to get their asses kicked so for 60 Minutes well actually more like 55 minutes of that game they were buckled down ready to go giving everything they have being in their right positions and I do think and and
Nick Felino alluded to this and you’ll hear from him later in the show too after the game on Monday that they kind of walked in said all right just as we were thinking all right here’s a little break in the schedule it’s Arizona let’s relax a little bit we can take our foot
