Roller skating championships from Bogota and once again Gary bender Thank You dick and welcome to Bogota capital of Colombia were situated on a plateau above the Andes Mountains 8500 feet above sea level Bogota is a modern city of six million people it’s Indian and Spanish roots are
Very evident in the city we’re at the 25th world roller skating championships and these events are being held at the colosseo el caffeine and with me again Mike Fleming the former US Champion thank you Gary this 25th world roller skating championship is shaping up into some very close competition in the pair’s event
Paul price and Tina Knisley the current United States champions who were second in the world last year our first after the short program but right behind them is the Canadian pair team of jeolban and Sylvie Jandra in the ladies singles event United States Champion kathleen o’brien DeFelice will try to lead our
Ladies to a comeback after some very disappointing routines at the United States Championships and in the men’s event current world champion Michael boots qey will be taken on by a very strong American team led by Michael Glatz but Gary the big story here is concerning the United States dance
Champions of Charles Kirchner and Lynda Todd let’s go back to the United States Championships this is the performance that won Charles Kirchner and Lynda Todd the United States dance championship but earlier this week at a workout Charles and his partner fell and Charles injured his quadricep muscles six days ago
Charles could barely walk there was a lot of swelling and a lot of fluid buildup dr. David Weiss Band an orthopedic sports medicine specialist was flown in from Cherry Hill New Jersey two days ago Charles tested his Lake and they were very optimistic about his progress it really feels good huh it’s
Still that one time lizard up yeah and that feels good but yesterday while warming up for the compulsories that optimism vanished when Charles Lake began to swell then it was all over and they were forced to withdraw from the competition we’re not going to if you’re not going
To be able I’m terribly sorry okay okay sir much dr. Weiss Bandar was your decision to have the team not skate is that correct that’s correct what was the reason well we went through a practice yesterday and Charlie tolerated it well he had no muscle cramps and had minimal discomfort
Today during the practice session the warm-up session he started developing severe contractures of his quadriceps our thigh muscle and I felt that it was it showed some evidence of possibly tearing a little bit more and rather than risk any further damage to his leg I thought would be better just to stop
The competition then Charlie and Linda this is truly a tough break what were your feelings when you were out there and warmup we went out there and we tried to go as easy as possible but the more we went I knew I couldn’t give the hundred-percent that we at Linda and I
Could do and I I went over the doc and he said that well the best thing to do is because it might be tearing and we can’t can’t help not worrying about next year and that’s what we’re worried about so we’ll try our best next year Linda
What are your thoughts now that you’re not going to be skating in this first world competition for you and Charles it’s very sad because we’ve worked hard for it it took us three years to get here but the only thing I can say is that would be even better next year you really
Never realized how much you love something to can’t do it disappointing to say the least but as you can see Charles and Linda are at the arena to cheer on their teammates and the hopes of the United States on the shoulders of Holly Valente and William Richardson they must carry the
Load and the standings after the compulsory which counts 50% shows them in second place the West German team of carols and Aachen Bach in the first position will be back for the dance competition in a moment for you take a beer here before my very op ball full no more liquor full it’s

Listings for the games of times in your area on CBS Sports welcome back to the police hillel champion as we want to show you some highlights of the dance competition this is 19 year old Cindy Smith of Petersburg Virginia and 20 year old mark Howard of Charlotte North Carolina
They were fourth that through the compulsories they finished third at the US Nationals mark and Cindy are an experienced team very polished an excellent unison Mike how do they determine the score Gary there are two sets of scores given the upper set of scores is for difficulty or content the
Lower set of scores is for artistic impression and those are good scores for Mark and Cindy and then from West Germany’s Gabriella ochsenbach 21 years old from Kiel Germany and Torsten Carole’s from Kiel Germany who’s 23 years old they were first after the compulsories Gary this team has some very original moves but
They’re skating at this meet was only tentative they’ve skated together for nine years they placed second at the 79 world meet look at those scores you surprised photos I sure AM Gary but the judges have left an opening for Richardson and wedding and now on the floor of the
Hopes of the United States 18-year old Holly Valente of Westfield Massachusetts and 22 year-old William Richardson of Boston Massachusetts their second after the compulsory but only two-tenths of a point behind the West German team this team is very dramatic and boy do they have charisma this is
Their first appearance at a world meet they finished second in the US Nationals the leaders the West Germans have already skated Mike how’s that going to affect this team well it’s going to put some pressure on them that’s for sure but they know exactly what they’re gonna
Have to do in order to beat that team is there even more pressure because Linda Charles were out with an injury no as a matter of fact I feel s probably going to be an added incentive for not only this team but for the rest of the American team
Gary look how dramatic they are when they’re skating they have such a good appearance on the floor like the music you know the music changes mood so does their skating you know one thing that makes this team strong is their edge quality they really get in and skate some nice edges very
Graceful lifting we’ve got some nice quick music and you’ll probably see them pick up on their foot Lee Gary this team is really going for it when the crowd likes it okay they’re coming up to the end of the routine it’s been excellent so far they can just hold
On to it this might do it for him Richardson and Volante for the United States a very impressive performance in you can see the Charles and Linda enjoyed it very much as the charisma of these two Guthrie really please the crowd as we look at them once again the pressure that
They’re skating with but they have been equal to that pressure putting on quite a performance and there’s the scores they’re very good we don’t know if they’re good enough let’s join Mike really had Holly a wonderful performance Billy do you think those scores are gonna be good enough to
Take over first I’m not really sure I’m just skating you know what happens over there that’s that’s for them to decide we just skate this is your first appearance that the results are in of the dance competition and the West German team of Aachen bakken Carroll’s has finished 1st Volante coming in 2nd
Along with her partner Richardson and then smith and howard of the united states finishing in third we want to show you something that happened last night in the men’s finals fans and Columbia take their skating very seriously as evidenced by the debris that was thrown on the floor they
Disagreed with a score that was given to a skater from Argentina and as an end result all of this disruption affected the skating of the u.s. national champion Michael Glatz from San Diego California you know Gary Michael put in probably one of the most difficult routines I have ever seen and
With that type of routine it’s very hard to be consistent he was third after the short program and he finished third in the finals and he also fell on a coin that had been thrown on the floor during that disruption also gear I should add that you know his coach homering haizen
Has really shaped Michael up the last couple of years both physically and mentally there was that fall and then finishing at second place the defending world champion from Germany Michael buuut Scott he’s from Bremerhaven Germany he was second after the short program and as we said finished in
Second I guess a question I would have is what’s the difference from this year as to his championship performance of a year ago well Gary last year we had two scores compulsory figures and freestyle and figures are quite a bit different from freestyle skating we don’t have that
This year so I think that’s making the difference now in the singles events a success story of the men’s competition 23 year old Kelly maeín of Irving Texas who was third at the Nationals but came in here and captured the world title Kelly is a very artistic skater and he
Had some difficult content and it was executed very very well is that the biggest difference between the Nationals and the world no I think the difference was the pressure was off these skaters really have a lot of pressure on them to qualify to be on that US team and with
That pressure being off I think Kelly was able just to let it go Kelly’s been skating since he was 3 years old Kelly started to get a little cautious here toward the end of his routine but I don’t really have in 1980 world roller skating championships Gary bender
Reporting Thank You dick and welcome back to Bogota Colombia the site of the 25th annual world wolverson 18 championships competitors from 18 countries of Bogota and Mike lemming as you can see here was it all work there was some fun you know Gary when these skaters get together from all
These different countries it’s like a big reunion every year they look forward to it and the international language was roller skating and this is where the world competition is taking place in this beautiful facility we want to show you what was a big success story in the women’s
Competition the 1-2-3 sweep by the United States women you’re watching Tina Knicely 17 years old from Marion Ohio she finished third in the world Gary this is only four in the senior competition and then we move to Kathleen O’Brien DeFelice she finished second she’s 22 years old from Langhorne Pennsylvania
Kathleen had some problems that occurred in the short program that really put her down however she sure is trying to make a comeback here a vast improvement from a year ago when she was 8 at the world beautiful interns a camel Cathleen was first at the Nationals and
Finishing second here in the world Walli double to all the nice combination out of that camel and then the world champion from Bakersfield California 20 year old Anna Conklin man is a very athletic skater and she has a lot of grace though to go along with that she began skating at 10:00 she’s
Originally a speed skater that’s right I believe this probably really helped her it gave her added speeds for example going into the spin she attacks the spins we’re getting ready now for the pair’s competition the standings after the compulsory nicely and price of the United States are in first place and the
First team that’s coming up from Canada he oven 21 years old from Montreal Canada this partner is Sylvie Gangrel from branding Canada she is 18 years old they were holding second after the short program as they came in to this final event Gary I’m sure they have their eyes
Set on that first place though nice side-by-side doubles Oh an unfortunate spill Mike how much that gonna hurt their score well she recovered pretty well from that she got up it didn’t really stop the flow of the routine at all very difficult death spiral out of that gamble over the head also
Another difficult move these two have been skating together for three years they place fourth in the 1979 world you know we’ve talked about the high altitude here at Bogota is it affecting the skaters absolutely Gary problem is not during the routine but when they come off the floor trying to catch their
Breath there’s definitely a lack of oxygen now many of the teams have brought along oxygen tanks for the skaters to have when they come off of the floor and it does definitely hinder them especially even toward the end of their routines nice twist beautiful reverse press
Pumpin and Endre of Canada and look at the Ovation they’re getting from this crowd here very much appreciative of just what was performed here in the Paris competition and they’re over there with their coaches they’ve got to be gold look at that Toby oh yeah there’s that lack of oxygen
Gets very difficult for these skaters when they come off the floor don Gaetz a coach I think she’s coming too now Mike that just shows you the tremendous effort that these two put in on this performance and the effort we’ve been seeing this entire week let’s go back
And look at the replay and you can see that Sylvie in the background has recovered and look at those from the united states he denies lee and paul price will be back with that performance when we return Swanson foots dinner together the way you like it crispy juicy chicken with all the fixin’s
Win Swanson you choose dark meat or white meat dinners you get just what you want from today Swanson your choice of chicken dinners it’s lightweight it’s portable it’s virtually indestructible this is WBA heavyweight champion Mike Weaver next Saturday on the CBS Sports spectacular he puts his title on the
Lion against one of the most punishing punchers in the fight game today second ranked Harry cozia see same day coverage of the WBA heavyweight championship fight next Saturday 4:30 Eastern on the CBS Sports spectacular Tina Knisley and Paul price will the shot at the world’s championship Tina’s mother Sharon has been traveling with
Her and she was asked what it costs to keep a roller skater competing I’ve never even attempted to calculate the exact amount but I’m sure it’s equal to a college education in rollerskating there is no end of the rainbow so to speak as an ice skating why do you think
Tina does it right now I think she has a goal set for herself which is a world champion the title beyond that I feel that she stays with it because she enjoys the travel with the world team for the world competitions what has Tina gotten out of roller skating in her
Years of competition preparation for life a moment of truth a chance at a world title Tina’s 17 years old from Marion Ohio all 19 years old from Howell Michigan Gary this team is going to have to skate perfectly three-time u.s. national champion from Paris second in 78 and 79 in the World
Championships and now going further the Lucy first world championship you know one strong thing about Paul and Tina is that they’re very consistent and they very rarely miss an item the reverse press into a cartwheel excellent living into a one-handed chairlift also called a militant oh that’s the pair’s
Team that won the world made last year they’re also coached by Tim Abel who is the same coach for Pollan Tina the championship is on the line and with it a lot of pressure side-by-side nipple clips Gary so far this is going to do it form if they can
Just hold it for the rest of the routine you can see her mother Sharon is reacting very favorably let me up to their last move about camels Gary I really think they’re doing it you think they’ve got it excellent routine Tina nicely and all price beautiful you can see as we look
At this replay they were pleased with what they did an outstanding performance by these two and look at the scores they know they’ve won it let’s join Mike is there anything that you could have skated better do you think call me I think this time right now to Lata’s our best right
What are your plans for the future right now we’re gonna go home and we’re gonna work cuz next year we want to be world champions again and Tina Knisley and Paul Price have won the pair’s competition their first World Championship in three tries the Canadians Jiang Brent hoppin in second
And the United States pair of Rick Ellsworth Ann Ann Marie green from fifth to third place so nicely and price have won the gold in the pair’s competition a very successful visit to Bogota by the United States as evidenced by the women’s 1-2-3 sweep led by 20 year old
Anna Conklin and then in the men’s competition a 23 year old Texan by the name of Kelly Mahan winning his first goal and while the United States was missing their outstanding dance team AB Linda Todd and Charles Kirchner William Richardson and Holly Valente in their first world competition
Finished second behind the gold medal team from West Germany
