This is more than a skate rink. It’s the place. Dockyard roller derby calls home and showing people just like getting hit dramatically because that’s the big part. Everybody loves about derby as you can hear when there’s a big hit and the whole crowd goes to Abigail Derby is more than just a sport.
I go by grays, which is short for Gray’s my anatomy to her. It means community. It’s, it’s a space where you can meet like minded people and bond over a sport that is, I don’t really wanna say fringe but is maybe unusual. It’s a community she says to her means everything.
It’s a community that will soon not have a home. So skate world as we know, it will not exist after March. So we don’t have a practice space after March. Skate world, Tacoma was not able to get their lease renewed by the building owner. Oh, I cried
A lot and Gray says with more and more rinks closing and only some rinks allowing derby, their options are limited, losing our practice space. That’s like a home that we’ve been at for the league’s been here for more than 10 years. It was pretty devastating.
Now, skating here, skate roll, Tacoma is not just for the derby teams. The owner tells me all kinds of people come here to make memories to lose this space, especially with the community we’ve created. We have so many people that kind of call our place.
It’s not a home necessarily, but it’s like the place to hang out with their friends, their family, the place to be active. Christina Sting is one of the owners of Skate World Tacoma. She says the building owner will use the space for their own business venture,
Which will not be a roller rink over the last year and a half, put over $100,000 in upgrades. That really fun carpet that you’re, you know, looking at right there. We’ve just, we’ve done all sorts of things. Now. She is trying to look at new places in Tacoma
So that the Skate World community can keep rolling dozens of roller rinks that have gone away over the past decade and I just don’t want to be one of those. And then hopefully the Dockyard roller derby community will thrive too. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
As long as I can help it. Derby and skating will not die in Tacoma. Connor Board King Five News.
