>> Jan: GOOD MORNING, HAPPENING THIS AFTERNOON, TWO GIRLS ARE PRESENTING THEIR IMPROVEMENT PLAN TO SEVERAL NEW HANOVER TOWNSHIP OFFICIALS. IT IS AN EFFORT THAT HAS BEEN MONTHS IN THE MAKING, STARTING IN OCTOBER, WHEN THE GIRLS HEARD THEIR HONKY RINK COULD BE TURNED INTO PICKLE BALL COURT. IT QUICKLY BECAME CLEAR THEY
WERE NOT GOING TO LET THAT HAPPEN. >> WITH THIS HOCKEY RINK I MADE MULTIPLE FRIENDS HERE. SHE IS ONE OF THEM. AND I JUST HAVE GREAT MEMORIES HERE. >> Jan: THAT’S LILY WALTER AND HER FRIEND NATALEE VAN-ROUGH. TOGETHER THEY SPENT COUNTLESS HOURS HERE AT NEW HANOVER COMMUNITY COURT PLAYING PICK
UP HOCKEY ON THE HOCKEY DECK. >> I HAVE MEMORIES HERE JUST ROLLER BLADING HERE, RUNNING AROUND IN THIS HOCKEY DECK, SO IT KIND OF JUST MEANS A LOT MORE TO ME THAN JUST HOCKEY. >> Jan: IT IS THEIR HAPPY PLACE, EVEN THOUGH THE RING IS WELL WORN THE GIRLS TAKE PRIDE
IN PRESERVING IT. >> ANOTHER THING WE DO IS WE STAY AFTER THE PICK UP GAMES OR WHATEVER, AND WE MAKE SURE NO ONE LEFT ANY TRASH, AND IF THEY DID WE MAKE SURE WE THROW IT OUT. >> Jan: SO IN THE FALL WHEN THEY HEARD THE TOWNSHIP WAS CONSIDERING PLAN TO REPLACE
HOCKEY WITH A PICKLE BALL COURT THE GIRLS RALLIED COMMUNITY SUPPORT TO STOP THE IDEA IN ITS TRACKS. BUT THE RECREATION COMMITTEE ALSO ASKED THEM TO BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION TO IMPROVE THE RINK. >> THE SURFACE THAT WE RUN ON, IT IS FILLED WITH CRACKS. SO WE WERE THINKING ABOUT REPAVING THAT.
>> Jan: NATALEE AND LILY WANT TO REPLACE THE BOARD AND DOORS AND BRINGING THAT TO TOWNSHIP LEADERS GO I’M EXCITED TO TELL THEM WHAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. SO IT IS SAFER, FOR EVERYONE. >> THAT’S A BIG KIND OF RESPONSIBILITY. AND WE WANT TO TRY TO AND MAKE IT THE BEST WE CAN.
SO I THINK IT FEELS REALLY GOOD TO BE ASKED TO MAKE IT BETTER. >> IT TAUGHT ME I HAD A STRONGER VOICE THAN I EXPECTED I HAD TO KEEP SOMETHING THAT’S VERY IMPORTANT TO ME. AND MAKE ME BELIEVE IN MYSELF A LOT MORE. AND LET ME KNOW THAT I CAN BE
A CHANGE MAKER IN THE WORLD THAT I LIVE IN. >> Jan: THE GIRLS HAVE THEIR MEETING WITH THE TOWNSHIP MANAGER AND TWO BOARD MEMBERS THIS AFTERNOON. IF THEY GET THE GREEN LIGHT, THEY COULD THEN PRESENT THEIR IDEAS IN FRONT OF THE FULL BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. THEY’RE ALSO LOOKING FOR
SPONSORS TO HELP GET THE IMPROVEMENT DONE AND CLEARLY, THEY’RE FANS OF THE FLYERS. HINT, HINT, JIM, JANELLE, INTO YOU. >> Jim: I’M IMPRESSED. >> Janelle: I MEAN THEY’RE 11 YEARS OLD. GETTING IT DONE. >> Jan: WHAT WERE YOU DOING AT 11 YEARS OLD? >> Janelle: RI
