We have a very special guest rolling into our studio today Danielle Barnett also known as the skate boss leaves a trail of smiles wherever she goes and we are happy to have her here with us today Danielle thank you so much for joining us proud I’m excited so you started
Something called skate boss tell me about it skate boss it started in 2001 okay and it was to bring us out of what I call uh we’re in the house most of the time yeah so I wanted to make sure that I created something fun for the children
To do and even adults even adults can um put on some skates I have sizes from size one to all the way to size 13 men wow so you provide you provide the skates I provide the skates how awesome and the floor and the floor the floor
The floor it takes me about an hour and a half to skate uh to to put together and then you can just start skating on it’s uh also bring the DJ so we have the music the skates the everything you need I bring the skate
The floor and the groove so I have to ask what got you into skating I’m sure this was something that you did when you were younger what made you find love in skating yeah when I was a kid I used to skate at Anacostia Park in Washington DC
And As I Grew old and old and and I resided in Charleston I really wanted to figure out how can I bring the youth back in myself and so that’s when I created skate balls and so I wanted to uh provide the skates uh Anacostia Park
Also provided us the skates too oh how wonderful yes that was nice it was like um um far as the city um so putting the skates on and and having all sizes that became attach but I I got it together and then I ordered the floor yeah so now
We have skates and floor and DJ flette On the Groove the grooves and now Danielle I know obviously skating is fun I feel like all of us have skated at least once in our life but what are some of the other things that especially youth things that they gain from skating
Right when I skate with the children I try to make sure that I teach them confidence hold their head up breathing techniques uh keeping your feet under your ground so I try to always talk to them and say stay grounded yeah hold your head up things that they can use um
When they’re not around me even though we’re skating it still is something that provides them confidence and assurance that they can do it you know what I mean and things that they will carry into other parts of their lives I love you need balance you need to keep your head
Up you know and you need confidence yeah absolutely now okay so we know that you bring the floor the grooves the skates community events you do a lot of community events now what about like birthday parties or like lessons do you teach lessons too yes I teach lessons I
Do oneon-one lessons I do group lessons if the person has friends I also do a churchy church events for the youth programs um shout out to sharica she’s my number one supporter everyone voice matters always make sure I bring the groove okay wonderful and now are there
Any upcoming events where we can find you um I’m not sure yet if there’s any upcoming events at this moment because they kind of hit me it’s Spirit of moment someone’s birthday or a church event so as they come in I just try to be prepared for them at that moment yeah
Well where can we keep up with you okay on Facebook I have a page made for if you just type in skate balls you’ll be able to see all the things that I’ve been doing um um that’s about all that I have right now because I’m building the
Website to have more options where you can purchase skates or purchase skate gear so once I get into that that’ll probably be this summer M well I do have to ask I I want you to show me some moves in a minute but um what are your
Hopes for the future of skate boss my hopes for the future is that we have more people um come out with their children to learn balance and communication because it’s crazy uh they listen to me so fast you would think that they wouldn’t but the children are
Really smart and I always say if you want to teach someone something you start when they’re young and they grab on to it so my hopes for them is to make sure when they walk out in the world they they’ll remember that I said be confident and hold your head up you know
What I mean absolutely well Danielle thank you so much and and you’re going to show me some stuff in a minute I’m going to bring the groove yay we’re back after This
