Which Moxi Skates Should You Buy?

The Moxi Skates Family

Moxi Roller Skates is a very popular brand and one that a lot of people want to know about.

Years ago we even met the creator of the Moxi Skates brand – Michelle Steilen or Estro Jen – when she visited Perth for a skating bootcamp.

Estro started a shop called Moxi Skates in Long Beach, California. After teaming up with Riedell Skates, Moxi was born!

At a time when most skates only came in black and white, Estro’s vision was to create a rainbow of brightly coloured skates and here we are.

The first Moxi to come out was the Moxi Lolly, but since then there have been a host of new styles and models to suit beginners, intermediate and advanced roller skaters.

So what’s the difference and which Moxi skates should you buy?

Moxi Rainbow Rider Roller Skates

One of the most recent additions to the Moxi family of skates is the Moxi Rainbow Rider.

The Rainbow Rider is a beginner friendly skate, perfect for a recreational skater who wants to skate indoors and outdoors.

This wider fitting skate brings the rainbow vibes with a pink, black or yellow colourway, featuring a cloud tongue, rainbow laces and stripes.

Underneath the vegan boot there is an aluminium plate, aluminium trucks, outdoor wheels and an adjustable toe stop (metric).

The Moxi Rainbow Riders are the most budget friendly of the Moxi Skates and suit skaters who are just starting out.

The only downside to this skate is the metric toe stop which is not as common as the imperial. The metric toe stop is a different size to many popular toe stops so it will only fit certain ones.

The Rainbow Rider are also not durable enough to use for aggressive skatepark skating.

Available in sizes 1-10. Moxi sizing is known to be different from Australian shoe size so we always recommend measuring your feet and comparing to their size chart to get it right.

Moxi Beach Bunny & Moxi Jungle Roller Skates

Available in 5 adorable colour ways the Beach Bunny roller skates are very supportive with additional ankle padding.

The Moxi Jungle skate is the exact same as the Bunny but has a leopard boot, pink liner and wheels.

They even come with a cute toe guard to protect the end of your skates.

These skates feature a moisture wicking liner with a stunning Bunny graphic, glittery laces and wheels.

Underneath the vegan boot there is an aluminium Marvel plate, aluminium trucks, adjustable toe stops (imperial) and outdoor 78A wheels.

Width wise, these skates are not very wide and they are also quite stiff so we find they usually suit people with a narrow to medium width foot.

The Bunny skate would suit a beginner to intermediate recreational skater looking for a stiff and supportive boot to use for outdoor skating, rink or dance.

As a skate park option these would be ok to start out in but usually won’t last very long on ramps, especially if you’re bailing from a height, falling and sliding a lot.

The only downside to this skate is how stiff the boot is. We find that skaters with a figure skating background (artistic or ice) really like the support of this skate. If you’re looking for a very soft skate, this is not the one.

Available in sizes 1-10. Moxi sizing is known to be different from Australian shoe size so we always recommend measuring your feet and comparing to their size chart to get it right.

Moxi Panther Roller Skates

The Moxi Panther skate is basically the black leather suede version of the Bunny.

They are made in the same place, to the same specifications, just a different colour and material.

The colourful glitter aspects have been subbed out for leopard so these skates have leopard laces and a leopard liner.

Unlike the Bunny/Jungle, the Panther does not come with a toe cap.

Being a leather suede these do last a bit longer lasting than the vegan material of the Bunny.

One of our biggest sellers!

Moxi Lolly Roller Skates

The original Moxi skates, the all leather suede Moxi Lolly roller skates.

The Moxi Lolly have always been a popular choice due to their beautiful soft leather suede material, deadstock lining and soft gummy outdoor wheels.

In fact, during the pandemic the Lolly skates sold out so many times it was virtually impossible to keep up with the insane demand for them.

But don’t worry, now things have settled down it is much easier to get them.

What sets the Lolly apart is their high quality components.

Unlike the Rider, Bunny or Panther, the Lolly is handmade in the USA.

Treated right, the suede leather could last a lifetime, the boot is also stitched to the sole (which increases longevity) and the 78A outdoor wheels that come on this skate are already big, wide and super soft (meaning you won’t need to upgrade them anytime soon).

Back in the day, the Moxi Lolly came with a heavier metal plate but this was switched out years ago to the nylon Thrust plate (with adjustable toe stops – imperial) which is lighter and more responsive.

Width wise, these skates are not very wide so we find they usually suit people with a narrow to medium width foot. Having said that, because they are super soft we have had people with wider feet purchase these in a size up to account for width.

Due to their high quality components these skates will last and last if used for recreational skating, dance and rink.

Perfect for any level skater – beginner, intermediate or advanced.

They can also be used at the skate park for beginner to intermediate skaters. Advanced skaters should consider the Jack or Jack 2 for a bit more stiffness.

If using them at the skate park don’t forget the Moxi Gummy wheels are a super soft wheel and they are not suitable for carving/intermediate tricks on ramps because the wheel is grippy and your foot can get stuck. So skatepark skaters will need to switch these Gummy wheels out for a harder skate park wheel.

There are a couple of downsides to the Lolly that you’ll need to consider.

One is the narrow fit, they just don’t suit every foot type and there are wider fitting brands out there.

Secondly, while the super soft boot is very comfortable and perfect for recreational skaters it can be too soft for those who want more ankle support for landing big jumps and tricks.

And lastly, the plate is nylon which is super lightweight but if you’re a heavyweight skater (over 100kg) or you are landing big airs then you may find the plate will flex too much and if put under enough stress can break.

Having said all that, I’ve had my Lollys for over 10 years and can report they are build to last. So soft and so comfortable.

Most colours are available in sizes 4-10 apart from the black Lolly which goes up to a size 13. Moxi sizing is known to be different from Australian shoe size so we always recommend measuring your feet and comparing to their size chart to get it right.

Moxi Lolly boots can also be ordered in a custom size and custom colour (ie one foot purple, one foot green). Custom timeframe for boots to be made and shipped to Australia is approximately 12 weeks but this can vary.

Moxi Jack 1 Roller Skates

Moving on to the Moxi Jack Boot, the newest and most high tech boot in the Moxi Skates Family.

There are 2 versions, the Jack 1 and the Jack 2.

Like the Lolly, the Moxi Jack is also handmade in the USA, also stitched to the sole and also a leather suede boot. It can be also ordered in a custom colourway and size.

The Jack is the most high-performance Moxi boot designed to withstand the stresses of ramp, park, and aggressive street skating. For that reason it is most suitable for intermediate to advanced skaters but would make a kickass beginner skate if you have the funds.

The suede upper is backed throughout for additional support in all directions.

Ankle padding and a soft, genuine Shearling (sheepskin) tongue lining make the Jack as comfortable as it is strong, and a lace bar stabiliser helps keep the tongue in place while skating.

Other high quality touches include solid metal hooks, waxed laces, and signature Moxi “M” on the backstay.

You can buy the Jack 1 as a complete setup or as a boot only. The complete options that we sell have a Reactor Neo or Reactor Pro plate which is one of the best plates on the market.

Compared to the Lolly or Bunny the Jack is slightly wider and would be good for most foot types.

The downside the Moxi Jack is the thing that makes it so durable, supportive and skatepark ready – the stiffness of the boot.

You will need to break this boot in and it might be a bit uncomfortable until you do so. We recommend 12 hours of skating to break in the boots and personally, we would recommend the blister proof socks to help you do this.

The other downside is price, the Jack boot and package is up there however it’s true that you get what you pay for. The quality of this boot is worth the price.

Available in sizes 4-11, including half sizes. Moxi sizing is known to be different from Australian shoe size so we always recommend measuring your feet and comparing to their size chart to get it right.

Moxi Jack boots can also be ordered in a custom size (up to 13) and custom colour (ie one foot purple, one foot green). Custom timeframe for boots to be made and shipped to Australia is approximately 12 weeks but this can vary.

Moxi Jack 2 Roller Skates

So how is the Moxi Jack 2 different to the Jack 1?

The Jack 2 has all the features of the Jack 1 but with a few extras.

The main difference between the Moxi Jack 1 and Jack 2 is the enhanced ankle support, stiffness and stability.

Jack 2 is double-backed with dual density ankle padding and open cell foam for long-lasting comfort.

This makes the Jack 2 ideal for park skating, grinds and landing hard-impact tricks.

Because of the extra reinforcements the Moxi Jack 2 requires a longer break in period (approximately 20+ hours) compared to the Jack 1.

The Jack 2 also features accents such as a black backstay design featuring the signature Moxi “M”, solid nickel-plated hooks, and a quality nylon webbing finger loop.

The downside of the Moxi Jack 2 is the same as the 1 – the stiffness of the boot.

You will need to break this boot in and it might be a bit uncomfortable until you do so. We recommend 20 hours of skating to break in the boots and personally, we would recommend the blister proof socks to help you do this.

The other downside is price, the Jack 2 boot is up there however it’s true that you get what you pay for. The quality of this boot is worth the price.

So that’s the Moxi Family of skates. There really is a skate for most skaters, you’ll just need to consider your level, budget, foot type and what you plan on using the skates for.
