He n hey we go welcome back every for another AB Nation locker room report tonight we have Mr for Toronto is in the house and for his monthly meeting with us the insid the M Canadian the Mr Maro is in is in the house tonight Marco how you
Doing I’m doing good guys how about you pretty pretty good how’s the weather and month ra uh I mean it’s going to snow tomorrow which probably nobody wants to hear about this but you know probably a little hotter than where you are right now and maybe you you send the snow from
Toronto to Montreal or what yeah it’s it actually started to snow here this afternoon so I’m not surprised it’s coming up that way that’s that’s unfortunate I don’t think anybody’s ready for that here I’m sure it’s early November right no yeah it’s early November so too early too
Early for the snow for sure hopefully it will be just one day then will be over uh tonight guys it’s a great Wednesday night every like I said Mar visit us one time per month and that’s where he’s going to be with us tonight for the next 60 minutes talking about the mon
Canadian for everybody in the chat already we welcome each one of you thanks to be with us don’t forget to click on the likes and if you any question guys the only way we can answer to your question question is to put the little Q in front of your question so I
Can pick it up and then slide that question to my and in our and they going to talk about this hopefully MCO you’re not going to be sick because on your right you’re sick and on your left I’m sick so hopefully you’re not going to be sick from
Us I I had my vitamins this morning I should be okay be awesome about that for sure uh that’s what we got tonight so what to do not like as you usually we set up little bit more the show about the fact like we going talk about specific things
Anything like that because we are right now already like a 12 game for the M Canadian and they have a roller coaster uh you know the last couple of game that so we just want to give you a little bit you know talk about what you think um
Since the beginning of the season the 12 or I believe it’s 552 now if I can recall it properly uh is it what you expect is it the way they did it is not what you expect your expectation was so give us a bit more your impression about
The first 12 game on the M Canadian yeah I mean first of all if you look at the Montreal Canadians as they are if you would have told me that they were going to lose Kirby DOC for the season and David card for eight weeks
And you would have told me that they had uh you know a 500 record by Game 12 I wouldn’t have necessarily been surprised I think it’s kind of understood when you look at the forward core that they currently have have the youth on defense um really the main thing that saved them
Uh during a lot of those games was goal tending uh the excellent play of Jake Allen uh you know and I say this right after he was pulled from the last game but he played excellent in October uh and in the last couple of games in
November for the Canadians so I I really enjoyed how the neily standing on their head as much um you’re starting to see a little bit of a hole in the Canadians defensive game and and reason for that is very simple young teams come out guns of Blazing at the
Beginning of the Season we saw it last year as well and then as you get into November and December the veterans get their legs moving they kind of know what’s going on and look I mean I saw I was at the game last night and I saw a
Very engaged Nikita kucherov this is a guy who’s WS two Stanley Cups doesn’t necessarily need to give 100% uh on Game 12 of the Season uh but he was running circles around the Montreal Canadians yesterday and that’s no that’s no insult to the can to the Canadians players I
Mean kucherov is considered one of the best players in the league and he definitely showed it yesterday so this isn’t necessarily a guy that’s known for quick starts he usually kind of explodes right about now but he started off strong this season uh so you can tell
Those veteran players are ready to go and Tampa Bay to give you an example is compensating heavily for the fact that they don’t have their top goal tender in Nets and in fact yesterday had an AHL journeyman in Nets um so you know they have to play really up to part so when
You look at a team like the Montreal Canadians they’re going to struggle it’s an inconsistent young team um and right now there’s not much room for competition which is usually what pushes the players to get better right now you have a lot of veterans that cannot be
Moved in and outside of the lineup because of their contracts or because of Clauses uh where youngsters would potentially be taking up those spots now does it sting in the in the process yes but I think it’s a far better situation to have a guy like say Cole Coffield or
Nick Suzuki kind of try to develop themselves I wouldn’t say with without pressure but it allows them to develop themselves within the concept of marttin St Louise play while the younger players like a joshuaa ill hin and Sean Farrell and more are playing in Laval kind of really kind of getting their juices
Flowing before being able to make that transition next year I think the Canadians it’s an unfortunate thing for fans that that you know want to see some results but you’re not going to see tangible results on a rebuild like this less than two years from the moment it’s begun I understand that theoretically
This began uh sometime in January or February of 2022 but for me a rebuild truly starts at the end of that season when you can start making trades and you get to the draft and you start acquiring prospects I think at that point that’s when you’re
You’re getting at your your rebuild so I I don’t think we’ve even reached the two-year Point yet for this thing um and that usually means that the players that you’ve drafted over the last two years aren’t even in your lineup with the exception of urce leowski and that’s
Already an arguable point to many fans that he be in the lineup or not so I think we need to give this maybe again another year where a lot of the players where some of the players in fact that were drafted are going to be Pro level
And I think at that point you could start evaluating yeah AB what you have in these prospects what you have and and really to me at the end of the day push forth the idea that if this is a rebuild if all these guys develop properly that’s only going to help your
Roster because some of them are going to have to be traded look on defense some of them are going to have to be traded at this point there’s too many uh if you could have that same problem in other positions well then you’re in a you’re
In a a spot to make big trades and bring in maybe that missing piece at forward that they desperately need when you talk about big threa are you talking about a specific position like we know the gold but are you talking about the specific no I think I think the Canadians
Specifically need a g like a a point per game forward to go along with Nick Suzuki Kirby Doc and and and Cole Coffield they need another guy and it you know if it’s OVI then everything worked out well for him in his development and that’s great but you
Cannot simply count on that when you’re when you’re in a market like Montreal you need to have plan B and to me when you see you know right now they’re trying to shed cap space on the long term they want full flexibility they’re adding picks in my mind I see this team
Set setting themselves up for a Kevin fiala trade like the LA Kings did two years ago where they have the prospects they have the picks they have the cap space and you’re going to have a team that won’t be able to afford a certain topend restricted free agent they’re
Going to jump on that or assumed to be free agent that’s priced out of his current market but would want to play for Montreal and Montreal has the funds to pay him you could broker and trade that way I think that’s what they’re waiting for on top of continuing to
Accumulate those assets on top of that because there’s going to be more than one TR TR I don’t think this is a rebuild where they’re strictly going to build through the draft uh it’s two drafts in a row they’ve traded first round picks for forwards I think we’ll
See it again uh at least with the way they’re going if the Canadians win the lottery by some Stroke of Luck well then that’s another story but assuming they don’t and they finish anywhere between I don’t know five and 15 you might not get a forward that can
Help you right away so they may look to either move that pick or if they’ve acquired another first round pick maybe leverage that pick to go and get themselves another forward that could potentially fit within the nucleus and push the team forward but right now there’s too many projects for M for
Marte St Louis to worry about in my mind with with the Alex new hooks the Kirby docks if he were still around and then the entire defensive Brigade you know Kaden ghouly Justin Baron Jordan Harris Arbor Jacky and and everything else the same age
Yeah yeah it it’s just a lot to be to be given at one shot and you can’t really expect this all to turn around like they are at the current moment I believe they are the youngest they are icing the youngest lineup in the NHL uh they just
Just edged out Buffalo after losing David svar who I’m pretty sure is the oldest player on the team right now or at least on defense so you’re getting close I think you’re getting close uh to to pushing the team to where it needs to be to get
To identifying who’s what and I think that’s what the season is going to do they’re going to identify who’s a keeper and who needs to be to to be moved out so like for example if the season were to end today Montreal management looks at this roster I think you have no
Choice to say I think maybe we have to try and you know cut our losses with a guy like GE Josh Anderson for example who great player Great Soul player but just doesn’t fit with the players that we want to include in our core maybe we should try and do something with this
Guy before it’s too late you know like that would be the kind of thing they’ll be looking at uh is it the time to move David sard seeing as kovich uh kovasovic sorry uh Justin Baron uh Jordan Harris and potentially David reinbacher next season could potentially hold that line
On the right side uh and you could you know let him go if a team offers you a first round pick th those are the variables that this team is going to be looking at over the next year uh and I know a lot of people
Right now want to include Mike Mattis in that we’ll wait and see that’s also an option but they’re going to weigh it and they’re going to wait for it and I think they’re going to be very patient so I don’t think there’s going to be any quick fixes on this season I think
They’re gonna have growing pains and you know fans wanted to rebuild and I will say one thing about rebuilds they’re fine and dandy for fans until it doesn’t go their way and then they hate it absolutely and unfortunately you you gota you gotta let
You got to let them cook you got to let these this management team do what they were brought in to do you can’t just throw in the towel what is it now uh 22 months into their process it takes much longer than that yeah the worst the worst could case
Scenario would be like some teams where they get caught in the middle of the league year after year they’re not addressing uh the rebuild process for themselves they’re trying to just retool and they never really achieve the status that they need to be at so they’re in
That land of mediocrity for uh year after year and it doesn’t get them from point A to point B so unfortunately it is a long process we we have been preaching patients for quite a while Marco and uh like you said I agree with you wholeheartedly it’s going to take
Time it’s going to take patience it’s going to take uh clearing out some more contracts on the team that are not at very good right now uh let’s just keep it at that and uh and also there’s a little bit of Lady Luck involved as well because you could draft very high
And sometimes your prospects don’t quite work out to the level that you anticipated in the beginning so we’ll wait and see what happens to that but um I I I just just want to say Marco first of all uh just as an aside um uh let me
Say what a a real honor and privilege it is to to have you with us join us uh on hockey nation family um and to give us your your insights and thoughts on the Montreal Canadians like I know you have a a plethora of uh different experiences
That you bring to the table and um I think everybody benefits from your expertise that you bring and we greatly appre appreciate it so thank you thank you any question I I do have another question then let’s Circle back to I guess uh you brought up
A matism and we kind of you know put the put the breaks on that for a while one of the questions I have right now is we’re seeing we’re seeing you know signs of a very talented individual at times and and in the last I would say maybe
Five six games not so much um in your opinion do you think it’s more a situation that uh he’s either perhaps playing injured right now or it could it be just the fact that he’s lost his uh uh defensive partner in sard and sometimes you work really well with
Certain partners and when you lose that it takes takes a while to sort of get a a climatized to a different uh partner and see where that goes what’s what’s your take on that Mark I think he’s injured I think there’s when you when you watch his skating strides they’re so
Crisp uh he’s very very good but it’s if we’re showing Clips this is actually going to help my point because I there were specific plays the way that he’s scanning the ice like on that goal there’s not exactly Allen should have probably stopped that there’s not much
You can do on that play uh that that’s a goal he’s safe to make he he was in the lane yeah but when you look at the way he he’s tracking players that’s where I kind of Wonder like is it really just an injury is it bad luck and we’ve seen it
Be bad luck over the last couple of games you know Puck jumping over a stick part of it in my opinion is I think there is something that he’s nursing um considering the way he started the season there was something that he was nagging but if the season started quote
Unquote he would be able to play um those um that quote was not lost on me by Marte St Louie so I think he’s definitely holding something because there is a there is lapses and concentration that are uncharacteristic of the player that you can see on the ice
And how I know that he is going to be all right is that when given the puck on his stick there are instances where he just creates Magic by just skating and opening up the ice and to me that that shows hockey IQ that shows skating ability that shows a
Willingness to make plays I think in my honest personal opinion I think that right now because of sar’s injury he’s just taking on too much minutes too many minutes uh and it’s time to give some of those players more minutes and I’m you know a lot of us have been talking about
Kaden gly Kaden gly makes a ton of sense the other one is Justin barar and I find those two play really well together but now you really got to start having a conversation about well what do you do with kovasovic and and Harris and if we base ourselves on yesterday uh although
Mat and Harris were on the ice for a few goals uh I think Jordan Harris is the probably the safer defenseman that could probably take on those minutes at the time at this moment uh Arbor Jacky uh needs to shore up a few a few aspects of
His game in my opinion before before he could take those minutes so I think mat is going to be all right if given the opportunity and time to to heal with whatever is bothering him and to get his his Mojo going again but um I think one
Major aspect of his play uh that I would like for him to to really kind of consider is shoot more that power play especially at five on five I find he’s more aggressive which is supposed to be the other way around you’re supposed to be a little bit more aggressive on power
Play um but I find him more aggressive at five on five to try and get shots through at at at five on four he it’s almost too cute it’s almost like he’s trying too hard to go to Nick Suzuki or to defer to co Cofield like you’ve got a
Bomb yeah just just take it just take the shot and I feel like that hesitation in his game that’s what you didn’t see last year last year I we can I think he had eight goals uh just off the top of my head and a lot of them were clappers
From the point so that’s all I’m that’s all I’m saying is that the capacity is there and he’s known to do it so to me something is bothering him uh be it health or or mental but again those are both things that you know reps and time
Will help with I think the only the only thing I would ask of Martin St Louie and this is something I’ve said before he’s very guilty of over relying on players and we see it with Nick Suzuki Nick Suzuki playing 22 minutes a game is not helping anybody uh including the
Player himself sure more opportunity to get points but not necessarily you’re not necessarily developing the player exactly how he’s going to be used when the time comes and I feel like reeling back those minutes is sometimes a hard even harder to do than to give them
Those extra minutes so it’s a it’s a balancing act to me and he’s doing the same thing on defense with uh with mat and I find this something that goes back to last year just way too much in terms of giving this the the guy minutes and
Of you know with the schedule they just had sometimes it catches up to you and I I can understand it I don’t excuse it I think he’s capable of better but I can understand it yeah well you bring up an interesting point though like we cleared house this
Year uh in terms of the uh the trainers that we brought in the medical trainers um and so one of the things that they raised was the fact that they were allow the the old regime was allowing players to play injured last year some of them against against their best desire so the
Fact that they have mat going out there if indeed it’s a it’s it’s an injury that he’s incurred and just wants a play I admire that aspect of it but I I think in in the long run it’s detrimental and there should be more of a I think a a
Leadership role taken there where they say we understand you want to be out there but you’re more valuable to us if you’re out there healthy than at 70% let’s say uh so you know that’s one area I’d like to see them really sort of be a little bit more adamant about and and
Just not allow the players to play if they feel that it could it could cause further problems down the line yeah there’s a flip side to that as well what would this defensive Court like as much as we want to talk about Mike Mat right now what would it look without
Him yeah let’s let’s all let’s all like Ponder on that for a minute because you would have no NHL veteran on this team like the the player I think with the most amount of games played would be Jonathan kovasovic who is a rookie last year so right that’s that’s not ideal
That’s really not ideal with svar and mat out and I think you know that that’s kind of why he’s powering through and I understand that you know a lot of of people are focused on on the mistakes and the breakdowns but I think that has
Much more to do with the team and how they’re being set up and much l to do about the one individual player um I just like I I keep saying it I just feel like right now the Canadians aren’t helping themselves in terms of team play
Um we saw it yesterday I found that team defense from the forwards was really lacking and it made guys like mat and Harris and ghouly look bad even though they weren’t necessarily playing bad um so again I think it’s it’s far more than just one player yeah absolutely well said uh we
Have two question before and after we can concern about this one is coming from Island uh no before that let’s go with Ron it’s funny was talk he was one you talking earlier to get a pi a uh get a play by trait Kevin F came on my mind
Earlier and he asked you about that question can of recover it now but he ask you about do you think montal should looking for a a trait like Kevin F or do you think he going to be an offensive player or a defensive players offensive player I think
Uh I think anybody that looks at this team right now uh you have you know first of all it’s understood that it takes defenseman a little bit longer to mature obviously everything’s much faster in terms of development today in the NHL but even then defensemen really kind of just kind
You know they hit their full stride 23 24 25 forwards can hit their stride as early as 21 22 and usually statistically at this point actually Peak at 23 24 in terms of Point production since the since the lockout since the original lockout or since sorry the longest
Lockout I don’t want him I don’t want to sound too young um but at the end of the day when you look at the way that the the team is structured the defense I wouldn’t say is set because there’s always room for improvement but if you had to look at the organization left
Defense not a problem right defense uh you’ve just used two first round picks over the last three years on right shot defenseman plus you traded for Jordan uh for Justin Baron so I and and you have Bogdan kuskov in Russia that is lighting it up and could come over and jump into
Your lineup in 2026 2027 so I think for the future you’re kind of okay in in that department in terms of defenseman what they lack on the team in their Prospect pool is a game breaking forward that could take over a game with that has lightning speed because Coffield great player agility rapid
Movement great not a super fast skater Nick suuki is average I would say in terms of skating could has his bursts but overall average UR lowski not a very fast player uh you know good skater for his size but not a fast player Alex newk
Is and and Kirby doc are really the only guys you would characterize as fast but Kirby do again is very fast for his size but he’s never going to win a race against a guy like Conor McDavid for example to a par you need to get or the
Canadians would need to identify a high-end player that could be within that kind of uh of setup you know one of the big names that always comes to my mind whenever I look around the league and I look at contracts and timing is Matt barzal Matt barzal is exactly the
Type of four the Montreal Canadians I find would need to add to what they currently have mixing up right now just that Elite play driving player that you can put with another on another line or with you know on the top line and it clicks and now you’ve got three guys
That are going a 100 miles an hour that could be at the elite of the NHL that’s what you’re looking for it and you know there are going to be options there will be options and that’s why I want I I would prefer to see a patient Canadians
Team because patience has usually won out if you look at the LA Kings now the LA Kings I’m not not mistaken are two points three points back of the lead in the NHL in terms of points uh not too far from the Vegas golden knights I
Think they have 17 points and Vegas has 20 or 21 uh this is a team that has so so goal tending although cam tal played well recently but the way that they’ve been able to build out their team was through patience through acquiring draft picks through acquiring
Prospects and then when it came time to pull the trigger you pulled the trigger and you go and get a Kevin fiala you go and get a pi Li duah those are the kinds of Trades when you have acquired those assets and you already have those core
Pieces and you need to start adding because your prospects aren’t developing fast enough there’s your there there’s what you’re looking to push right they wouldn’t have needed to go and get a Kevin fiala if Alex turkot developed like a fifth overall pick normally would
But he hasn’t and so that was a hole in their lineup and they addressed it but because they had the cap flexibility because they had the assets the tangible loose assets the spendable assets you’re able to be aggressive that way because everybody lacks both right now picks and
Cap space and if you have both you’re in the driver and I think that’s what if you if you pay attention to what Kent Hughes is doing yes it looks like he’s setting that up in 2025 because he’s just banking on those picks I’m sure
He’s going to get more U you know before the trade deadline this year I I would not be surprised if you know what Calgary Montreal’s pick in 20 I wouldn’t be surprised if in 2025 one of those two first round picks is traded my two s sorry about that I have
Behind about that I thought you was complete I have another question from Al ask you know it was really a drama last weekend about sakasi I think it was start like Thursday Friday and um do you think we should spend the time in American a leag this is a question
Happening a lot of time last week so what you think about that situation for sakasi if I were an NHL general manager he star power like he’s not he’s not a guy that’s necessarily going to be the Superstar because they didn’t look like there were any Superstars at
The time but he is unique in the sense that there are very few of the player that he is projected to be in the NHL and those guys usually come up to 22 23 um I think at that point that’s when you start seeing uh kind of an issue uh
With the way that things are developed because in a rebuild if you’re picking a guy from first overall and you want him to be a star by the age of 22 23 then you try to build up their confidence at 1819 and that’s why that’s why sending
Him to the American Hockey League first of all is is is a is rare because only European players and NCAA players have that rights CHL players have to go back to Junior so it’s it would have been an interesting Dynamic um the only thing I
Would say in the favor of keeping him up with Montreal is the fact that he gets to work one-on-one with Martin St Louis on a daily basis and that’s what they’re banking on that’s what they’re banking on they’re banking on him being in the pet project of a Hall of Famer that
Knows how to teach and if he knows how to teach and he’s patient with the player and he gives the player opportunities and this is where I’m key on this gives the player opportunities because Ur I lov’s most common linemates over the last two seasons have been y
Have been y Aria Jake Evans Alex new hook and Josh Anderson Josh Anderson yeah I just I don’t think it’s going to work I don’t think it’s going to work that way you need to give the kid the bone like let’s see what he can do I
Would like to see him play at least 10 you know five to 10 games on that Top Line more so towards the 10 less so towards the five uh and see what happens you know yesterday you saw flashes you saw some good skill but everybody looked
Bad uh so I I won’t put that on him but against St Louis I I liked the way he was moving his feet I like the way he was going to the net he was trying things he looked like he was gaining confidence to me you you have to get a
Larger sample size on what he can do because right now you’re seeing flashes we need to see what he can do you know with the top players on this team because that’s when you look at development that’s generally what happens for rebuilding teams is that a lot of those younger players are tried
With the best like when Matt bener started in Seattle it’s not like he started on the third line he started immediately in the top six um you know Luke Hughes is playing behind a strong defense but now he’s earning he’s forcing his ice time because he was
Ready because he was given the time to marinate in the in the NCAA a year longer than most Devils fans wanted to allow him to do it because they they thought he was ready after his the first year after his draft year stayed another year and it’s apparently paying off so
I’m on that patience wagon I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the AHL if he continues to struggle but I but knowing what I know from the Canadian staff about how they view you slovsky’s development I would be pretty shocked if he is sent down to the American Hockey
League before Christmas I just don’t see it happening I think he would really really have to fall off and work miserable on the ice for them to do that yeah and and he’s he’s shown improvement from last year you see him skating with his head up a lot more he’s he’s trying
To get into corners and using his body to his Advantage quite a bit uh they’re small things but it’s those small things that add up in the end uh Marco and that’s I think what the key thing is if it were last year I I would agree with
You wholeheartedly to say you know what let’s send them down and get a a stint in Laval um and and see how that goes in terms of giving him some confidence because it came to a point where we saw you know he had lost his confidence uh in his his
Home play and to a degree we still see it this year uh but it’s a little bit better like I I would like to see him shoot more I mean he does have a good shot a good wrer and especially as as he gets from the um faceof dots in he’s got
A really good shot like we saw the other night when he scored um but he always seems to look for the pass first even when he does have the lane to either skate in or take the shot himself and maybe that comes with time it’s it’s it’s it’s
Definitely a coachable thing but uh uh i’ I’d like to see those tiny improvements and like you said put him in a position where he can succeed if you put him in a position where he can’t he won’t for the most part because he’s not that kind of a an All-Star that he
Can put that line on his back and carry it um if anything somebody else has to yeah look to me I want to see a player that’s picked first overall Drive plays first and foremost like you were not picked first overall to be a complimentary player like there you you
Cannot if that is the case Ken Hughes and Jeff Gordon are in for a mountain of grief over the next couple years uh so if that’s not the case which is what we all assume then you need to have a more assertive player on the ice and since
This is in this first season you want to see what you have with him in terms of execution so if I’m Martin sing Loui I’m spending practice after practice taking quick shots taking immediate snap shots like just receive shot catch release catch release catch release because
That’s what made him such a a dynamic play at the Olympics and yeah it was just that quick release and being able to play in tight and having that reach he’s not doing that at the NHL level because you have to be faster you have to think faster he’s not processing that game
Quickly enough for him to be able to execute the same way he he did he will eventually get there because he’s going to put in the work uh I still think he’s got uh room to to to to to lose some weight at 2:30 even if you’re 64 I think
That needs to come down by a couple by maybe 10 pounds to be truly effective and and Speedy enough to follow the the the pace of the game but you’re going to get to a point with him where you need to make a decision you know what is the
Outcome for him do you want this guy to be a first line play driving player yes then you have to put him in a position where he’s going to be able to do that long term is that necessarily playing on a apologies for this Canadian fans playing on a mediocre
Team uh that just lost its second line Center and is relying on on Shawn Monahan to hold the fort is that necessarily the best environment for him to develop I don’t know because it can go both ways you could have a hary perard moment where comes in out of nowhere
Plays with a guy like Nick Suzuki pots 14 goals and and now is a fixture in the Montreal Canadians lineup or it could turn into and I’m going to go back in the vault here but it can turn turn into a Nikita sherback situation where he’s called up looks like he performs but
Just completely falls out of favor and so that’s where you want to try to be careful in on what it is you do with the player I’m I’m again I’m torn I’m very very torn but like everything in sport performance will dictate outcomes yeah there’s there’s nothing to
Lose I mean that at this stage there’s a lot to lose no no I’m saying this year like in terms of putting him in those situations if if it doesn’t uh you know pan not like you’re fighting for a playoff spot right so this is the problem this is the
Actual problem the Canadians are telling the media telling us that they aren’t looking at the standings playoffs are not something that they necessarily foresee they’re not they’re not no in that room they are talking about keeping up and making the playoffs and staying competitive and if you look at the
Decisions that Martin St Louis is taking he’s not necessarily taking all those decisions with the idea of development he’s trying to win games because at the end of the day when you look like Martin s is an individual when you look at his resume at the end of the season is there
Anybody anywhere that’s going to look at that resume and say maybe the Canadians should have gotten a more EXP experienced coach like it doesn’t make him look good either so this is a guy who’s trying to win games and I can understand it from that perspective and that’s where you that that unhealthy
Balance between development and and winning comes into effect because we’ve said it time and time again the NHL is not a developmental League um you know so we’ll see we’ll we’ll see but I think a guy like Mar St Louis isn’t playing around I think he very much wants to
Have a winning uh a more of a winning team and he’s going to make decisions to try to win games and sometimes that may be putting a youngster on the side of the bench and we’ve seen it throughout the last season we’ve seen it so far
This season um so I think in his eyes he’s still got a lot to lose uh but I agree with you given the makeup of the team given the season given the injuries already you know I would be experimenting right now because management wants to find out who’s a
Keeper and who’s a goner it’s the best way to figure it out what said we have a question for Mar said I ask you about what you heard about the contract negotiation between montal and Samuel mono so there a question I asked uh I think yesterday no uh on Monday uh
Before the game and I was told uh you know very preliminary like ju like testing the waters just looking to see where everybody’s at in terms of how they’re feeling what they’re looking for the general idea from each party I don’t think uh and I could obviously I
Could be wrong because negotiations like I said happen like this and Kent Hughes is very very quiet when it comes to contract negotiations so this isn’t coming from his count um so from what I’ve been told it’s very preliminary uh and they really want to
Play out the season to a degree to see where he is in his play before they begin to start talking about committing years uh to a goenda number of a possibility of a five-year contract is that just speculation out there right now or or I think that’s I think that’s I think
That’s pure speculation um yeah unless it is a very very advantageous cap hit like I’m talking like you know stupidly advantageous cap hit then I don’t see first of all why monteno would sign it unless he doesn’t believe that he could you know play better than that but I also don’t see
Why the Canadians would throw five years at a goenda that they still are trying to figure out right now I think that that may be part of the disc it maybe what what the monteno camp is looking for but for a team that wants to gain cap flexibility moving
Forward I would be I would be shocked to see that kind of term agreed upon right right and since since we’ve opened up Marco the Pandora box here let’s talk about the three-headed monster in in net here what’s what’s your take on in terms of what will
Happen because in my in my in my thought thought you can’t keep Kaden Primo on the sidelines as much as they have been um it it’s detrimental playing I think he’s playing tomorrow oh he might be playing tomorrow okay that’s good that’s a good decision but it having said that
It’s only a second game of the year right um and I think he needs the Reps he needs the games he needs the experience H how do you think this will all unravel and I know it’s purely speculation at this point but in in your I think the
Canadians I think the Canadians at the very beginning of the season if you go back and listen to to Jeff Gorton uh sometimes man uh just a little loose on on the information as Jeff Gorton but they were waiting they were waiting for the goalie Market to shake loose that’s what he said
And now you’re starting to see the goalie Market is starting to form Carolina might need a a new if things don’t work out with hak Edmonton might need a goalie re soon uh I think the Kings would like an upgrade in net without necessarily sacrificing too much cap space and not many teams
That are that are able to trade goenda to be flexible to make those kinds of moves where they can take salary in and salary goes out or even an you know a higher salary comes back in uh so that’s the team acquiring the goenda space in the process that’s
Another advantage that Montreal has over other teams is it has with Kirby doc out now 10 million to play with uh in terms of ltir on top of what they’re already using so to me it’s there’s a lot that could happen the Canadians have given themselves options but the team they’re playing tomorrow
Detroit also running with three goalies uh Alex Leon James Rhymer and villy huso so there are options it’s not just the munch all Canadians and that’s why it’s it’s really funny to see on social media every time something happens with a goalie uh take Jake Allen take Jake
Allen take Jake Allen take Jake Allen like no it won’t necessarily work that way one given his cap hit um it’ll it’ll probably be a bigger crunch than that but I feel like the Canadians weren’t going to start the season initially didn’t want to start the season with
Three goalies and then I was told that it might actually be an eventuality because they were waiting the goalie Market to shake up if the goalie Market is shaking up right now we may see some movement in that department uh but the Canadians I feel like a lot of this and
The reason why they don’t want to lose Kaden Primo is is directly tied to the Sha the the Samuel monbo negotiations because if that goes sour who’s your goal tender in the future because Jake Allen’s contract is over next year so it it forces a lot of continuity questions
And I think one will answer the other will answer the other that will answer the other that will answer the other so you got to you just got to play it out wait and see um I think that other than last night Jake Allen has has played
Exceptional and has shown that he could be a strong player in a time of need uh especially with the Munch Canadians every game is is almost a a time of need for them um so if you can play well behind that young defense you would probably be likely assumption but you
Would probably be likely to play as good if not better behind a more experienced defense and I think so that’s what a lot of Scouts are probably trying to pay attention to and teams as well um now even if they make a trade will it be a
Massive return I don’t think so I I I think it’ll be what it is I think a lot of fans that are expecting first round picks from from teams that are in trouble um might not realize that not every team is the Colorado Avalanche uh and the Canadians are most definitely
Not trading a Darcy keer uh you know in in the midst right now so yeah they just don’t have that and and to me it it is GNA be interesting to see how Kent Hughes and Jeff Gordon wiggle this out but I agree with you they’re
Not doing Kaden Primo any uh any favors in his development if you look at his last four years I don’t think the Montreal Canadians in general have given him much in terms of a chance developmentally uh if you think back to the the times of the taxi Squad uh where
He was just sitting in the stands waiting to be an extra um and then called up when there’s injuries never played stayed on the bench and then eventually sent down it’s just he’s never really gotten to to to play those to play and show what he can do I hope
That he’s going to be able to do that with the Montreal Canadians if not then I do hope that he’s traded sooner rather than later yeah not to mention that it’s left a bit of a hole in Laval uh does has not really sort of really escalated it uh
Quite at the level they have and it’s they’re they’re finding it difficult to find uh their skates there and and the go tending while it hasn’t been horrible it hasn’t been Stellar either and so that’s maybe an area that they want to concern but just quick quick throw at
You if if Edmonton offers uh asks you for Allen and offers you Dylan Holloway do you do it oh in a heartbeat that’s the equivalent of getting a first round pick exactly I mean not and and again that’s not an asset that the Edmonton Oilers are giving much of a chance to
Either consistently playing them on a fourth or or third line uh but I just feel like yeah I mean I get it but at the same time you know I I think for a player like him you could easily be trying him against topper you know higher Talent guys that could really
Push the play I don’t see why they can’t play him with Ryan Nan Hopkins and and uh and Evander Kane on that on that second line but again yeah that offer would be an immediate the only problem is is Edmonton can’t fit that under their cap space they only have
$600,000 in cap space right now and and Jake Allen sporting a $3.8 million cap hit so even if the Canadians were to use their lash retention slot get a third team to retain again and then trade him to Edmonton they still wouldn’t be able to do it because right now they’re
Running on a 21- man Rost and there 600,000 away from the cap so they’re they’re tighter than tight they’re running at a deficit well said we have a question from um William ask you will odson be skating with the montalk in next season I think he’ll be skating with the Montreal Canadians this
Season I think I I mean not and and I don’t mean this to be to to you know in a you know know it all kind of way but his season will end whe regardless of what happens at most I believe it’s the 9th of April the last day of the Frozen
Four the final in fact so if he gets to the final he still have time to sign his entry level contract burn a year and play some games with the Montreal Canadians which is what Sean Farrell did last year uh it’s what Jordan Harris did
The year prior uh and I don’t think he’s going to go the the Jaden strubel route which is signing a a professional try out with Laval and his entry-level contract starting the next year no no no he he is a top level Prospect he is going to get the top level treatment
Just like Cole Coffield for example uh where he will get the entry-level contract burn the first year play out the the rest of the season with the Montreal Canadians and then next training camp well that’s where we’re gonna have to see is it sent as we’ve
Seen and I give the direct example of Max pachetti in Vegas Max patriotti signed it at 29 years old fouryear deal $7 million played really strong the other two years but then they had they just gave him a away to shed cap space to the Carolina Hurricanes you know he
Became that Expendable that quickly because the the the play will drop in consequence for players of that ilk and I think shaan has has an elite brain but the body may not follow after a certain while and that may inhibit him from being a good long-term piece for this
Yeah totally agree totally agree with that assessment like I my biggest worry is always the health issue especially when it’s a hip injury that he’s trying to recover from um you know so far knock on wood he’s he’s been able to to stay healthy but it’s not a guarantee and not
Too many players come back from those types of injuries and sustain that health for a long period of time as much as he’s useful as a as a veteran and a voice of experience to have on the team I think the assets that he can bring are are more valuable in the long
Run yeah I mean if the Canadians we’re talking about late first round picks but if the Canadians can trade Shawn Manan for the equivalent of what they got for Terry linan for example which was a prospect an already drafted Prospect like Justin Baron and a pick things get a little bit more
Interesting because if you can get a forward prospect that has legit top six ability that’s for example maybe a center prospect that could help a lot uh or a goal scorer with size type of prospect things start to get interesting because that’s another piece you can add and you
Put on your development team which you’re banking on to do well so I think there are options on the table and this is going to be this is gonna be a weightof game what are Shan manan’s contract demands what are Sean manan’s performances at the trade deadline and
How does that weigh against the potential returns that they’re getting or the the the trade offers they’re getting from the market and they’re going to weigh all of those things and if Shan manahan is not signed by the trade deadline I think you have your answer well said Marco we already passed
