The Athens Ohio roller derby will be hosting their first int League scrimmage to kick off their new season for 2024 tomorrow afternoon and I’m joined by two people who will be participating in the event trickster and carpet Burns ladies thank you so much for joining me thanks
So much of course now carpet Burns I want to come to you first can you tell us all about the event going on tomorrow absolutely it’s our first event of the season it’s an inter league scrimmage it’s going to be at ping recreation center with with Ohio University the
Doors open at 1 the whistle is at 2 so you got to be there before then um tickets are $10 they’re on our website which is a.org um it’s the first time for a lot of our skaters it’s going to be their first time participating in one
Of our bouts so we’re very excited for a lot of those new skaters absolutely it sounds like it’s going to be a fantastic and really fun time now trickster I want to turn to you how did you get involved with the Athens oh Ohio roller derby
Yeah um it’s kind of funny cuz I was I was kind of dragged to my first practice uh by a friend and I was like okay I guess I’ll come along and immediately was hooked I saw one person do a cool move and I was like all right I have to
Do this and I’m committed for the next 10 years so um that was really exciting um we met on our first practice um and we’re instant good friends yes um and yeah it was a great time uh yeah committed absolutely and so carpet Burns I want to turn to you
Because we did an interview on Daybreak when I was over on that show last year and that was your first kind of go around for this so how has it gone from one season to the next now it it was amazing um our season last year we had a
Lot of success a lot of wins under our belts um Athens Ohio roller derby has really really grown in that time we have our largest league so so far we have 30 members skating and 34 active members um which is very very big for our team so
Um between last year we had one team the appalachin hell betties and this year we’ve actually expanded to include the Black Diamond betties so we have different levels of skating and different levels of participation um so more people get more track time all around right um last year as well it was
My first time with the league my first time really getting into a more competitive sport um and I had a great time the friendships that I formed the involvement in the community just absolutely changed how I saw myself in Athens um and how I really supported the
Area um we’ve done a ton of different fundraisers and a proceed of a portion of the proceeds from each of our bouts actually goes to a local charity um and we get to choose different charities each time based on the interest of the league um and what our members are
Really passionate about so jumping into the league both feet was really really worth it um and I really I I mean I love our community it’s really a great time absolutely that sounds wonderful now I have to ask too cuz I’m sure the people at home are wondering how did you guys
Decide your names for your roller derby names yes um I carpet Burns kind of grew on me a little bit more um I initially was leaning towards the nickname of Burns and then had a long process of figuring out what would fit with that um and I think carpet Burns it’s got It’s
Got a little twist to it and I like it a lot trickster how about you yeah well my um my background is in uh figure skating okay so that’s kind of where it came from is like being able to I was able to pick up on some tricks like pretty
Quickly and uh as a Jammer I get to throw those in sometimes when I’m trying to skate past people um yeah so that’s kind of where it came from and I like the the one name punch absolutely now before I let you both go is there
Anything else that you would like to add about tomorrow’s event or about the team just in general yeah absolutely we have 10 games this season we have five games in Athens coming up um so the scrimmage is one of them and then we have an event
In March in May uh in July during Brew week in Athens and then also in October so come out to every single event come to all of them see us win again and again um and then some of our away games are all throughout the Midwest um and we
Have some double headers going on we have a tournament going on um and we’re really going to expand this next year and it’s going to be a great time so got to come to all of them well it sounds like it’s going to be a fantastic day to
