Amsterdam is the town with great facilities for both inline and roller-skating.
And in 2025 even more!
Discover why in this Guest Blog-post from skate local Lex.
Skating the city is very cool, as it has so many benefits.
Inline skating is not just about physical health benefits, but skating in the city frees up your mind and is a
great social activity and you get to see some nice hidden gems in this appealing town. I approach skating
in a great roller city from a psychological and even spiritual point of view. It goes beyond physical
benefits.

What determines a great skate city?

● Great squares and parks for practicing. (partly on tourist hotspots)
● Excellent skate routes, being pretty safe as well.
● A renowned, well-organized weekly nightskate
● A speed skate club, for half a day tours in the countryside of the capital of the Netherlands

● 1 or 2 yearly skate events with an international appeal.
● Skate lessons, both in groups and privately. (And internationally renewed skate teachers visiting with a yearly guest skate lesson.)
● A great skatepark for aggressive and vert skating. (Zeeburgereiland skatepark)
● Skate Shops (With passionate people who skate as well.)
● a skate marathon
● attraction from skate tourists from all over the world.
● breathing skate history
● The town itself: appealing, tempting, open, well-known.
● History: In 1893 Amsterdam has hosted the 1st World-cup for ice skating (behind the Rijksmuseum!)
Amsterdam has it all, except for a skate marathon. (At least not officially.)
In Amsterdam you can skate virtually in every corner. Yes, you can skate on your own or with friends anytime the roads are dry.
Volunteers of Friday Night Skate have made this free Amsterdam skatepage for you with skatetracks, parks and squares. Try not to become overwhelmed, as you have never seen this kind of individual skate abundance like this before. (And it is all there, waiting for you without any costs.)
Asha Kirkby from Skatefresh says about inline skating in the capital of the Netherlands;
“Oh Amsterdam, how I miss your smooth streets and elegance. It’s so great for skating. Like skating through a dutch painting…. (the countryside bit) and the city and modern architecture is so cool and funky plus all the old maritime history and engineering. Love the Dutch!”
Countryside around Amsterdam: you cannot imagine this skate dream.
A video clip of the Sunday Morning Skate club (SMS), showing the cool countryside around Amsterdam, including amazing and flat tarmac. The skate tour is indeed called “around Amsterdam” and for a reason. Only watch as a skater, if you have some time left afterwards to get back to your senses before going to sleep. 😉
