At Lucky Skates one of our passions is saving bums and a very helpful tool in the bumsaving crusade is the use of impact shorts.
What are Impact Shorts?
Impact shorts (or Bumsaver shorts) are padded shorts and can be very useful to help reduceย coccyx or tailbone injuries that can be sustained while skating.
Butt, there’s so many to choose from and it’s hard to know what’s the difference and which ones will work best for you.
Padded shorts, impact shorts or bumsavers can be used for all kind of activities.ย
We have sold them for all the usual sports like skateboarding, scootering, inline skating, roller skating, roller derby, roller hockey and for a range of unexpected sports like snowboarding, basketball, AFL, soccer.
Sometimes people buy them after an accident to their hip, tailbone, thigh or butt and other times people buy them as a precaution.
The great thing about most impact shorts is that they can be worn under your clothing so you can’t even see them but they give you that extra confidence when skating or competing.
Impact shorts are also for all ages, plenty of kids and adults wear them and they’re not just for beginners.
Lots of experienced skaters wear them, especially when trying new tricks.
Different Types
There are several different brands creating impact shorts.
At Lucky Skates we stock Pro-tec Impact shorts, Rekd Impact Shorts and Triple 8 Bumsavers including the Bumsaver, RD Bumsaver and Bumsaver 2.
To measure up for these shorts you will need your waist measurement. Measure around your waist and check the size chart.
All of the shorts are pull up, similar to a bike short, except for the REKD which also has an opening around the crotch which secures with a velcro tab.
The material of impact shorts is a stretchy lycra material for a snug and secure fit.
Each of the shorts has padded reinforcements in the most common impact zones such as the tailbone, hip and thigh areas. The thickness of padding varies between the models.
In the Triple 8 Bumsaver 2 and Protec Impact Shorts the padded areas are fixed in place (they can’t be removed).
The Triple 8 RD Bumsaver and original Triple 8 Bumsaver has thicker foam pieces that can also be removed from the shorts themselves via a small hole located on the inside of the shorts. None of the other shorts feature this.
The REKD Impact shorts has non-removable hip and thigh padding and one removable Energy Coccyx Pad piece (it’s highlight green) that can be removed from the shorts when washing them (it velcroes out). That padded piece is unique from the other foam pieces because it hardens on impact which dissipates the energy from the impact.
Most of the Impact shorts are mid thigh and a unisex fit and shape aside from the Triple 8 RD Bumsaver which is more of a booty short with a shorter crotch length and the Triple 8 Bumsaver original which has a longer crotch length.
Most impact shorts should be hand washed only. Avoid machine washing or using a dryer, as this can damage the padding. To clean, use a gentle detergent, lukewarm water, and hang them to dry. Refer to the product for instructions.
