Every skater needs a helmet they can trust.
S-One Helmets (also known as S1) have built a serious reputation in the skating world — and for good reason.
Here’s everything you need to know before you buy.
Why S-One Helmets Stand Out
S-One Helmets are designed specifically for roller and action sports like skating, skateboarding, scooter and even bike riding.
The key difference is their EPS liner — a high-density foam that’s engineered to handle multiple low-to-medium impacts without losing its protective integrity.
This matters because skaters fall repeatedly during practice, and a helmet that degrades after one hit isn’t doing its job.
S1 helmets are certified to ASTM F1492 (skateboarding) and CE EN1078 (cycling/skating) standards, meaning they’ve been independently tested and verified for safety.
When you see “Certified” in the product name, that’s the standard it’s been tested to — it’s not just a marketing term.
Get A Lifer
The S-One Lifer is the flagship model and the one most skaters reach for.
It’s available in an enormous range of colours and finishes — from classic Black Matte and Black Gloss through to bold options like Cotton Candy, Watermelon, Matte Leopard, and Silver Mirror.
The Lifer sits low on the head and covers the back of the skull more than a typical bike helmet, which is exactly what you want for skating.
It’s suitable for all types of roller sports like roller derby, roller skating, skateboarding, scooter and inline skating.
3 S-One Models
The S-One Lifer comes in three sizes – Mini, Regular and Mega.
- The Mini Lifer is for kids under 6 years old and those with small heads (18.5 – 20.5”)
- The Lifer, Lifer Retro, Lifer Visor are for kids over 6 years old, teens and most adults (20.5 – 23.5”)
- The Mega Lifer is for those with bigger heads (23-25.5”)
Aside from the 3 sizes there are some other options including the Visor, the Brim and the Retro.
The Lifer Visor comes with a visor and is designed specifically for full contact roller derby where there is a chance that there could be accidental head contact.
The Lifer Retro is developed to have that old school moto-bucket aesthetic and provide maximum full coverage protection to the ears and side.
The Lifer Brim has a brim, so if you like a little more sun protection or wear a hat under your helmet you might like the brim option.

How to Choose the Right Size
S-One helmet liners come in XS through XXXL.
To change the helmet size you just change the liner (it easily velcroes in and out)
To find your size, measure the circumference of your head about 2.5cm above your eyebrows using a soft tape measure.
The helmet should sit level on your head, about two finger-widths above your eyebrows, and feel snug without pressure points.
The liners are removable so you can fine-tune the fit.
For growing kids this is great because you can simply replace the liner with a thinner liner when they grow.
If in between sizes you can do a combination of liners.
For example red (small) in the front and grey (x-small) in the back so that you can get the perfect fit.
If you change your hair style you can also use the liner system to change the size.
If you order an S-One Lifer helmet and the size is wrong, the good news is you generally just need a different liner, not a whole new helmet.
S-One Visor for Roller Derby
If you play roller derby and think you might want the visor then purchase the S1 Lifer Visor Helmet.
You can always take the visor off when you dont want it but you cant add the visor onto the standard Lifer Helmet.
Don’t forget there is a special clear film on the visor when you take it out of the box so remember to take it off before you skate or you wont be able to see good. The number of times this has happened despite our warning – I can’t even count anymore!

When to Replace Your Helmet
Helmets don’t last forever, especially with all the stress we put them through.
You should replace an S1 Lifer Helmet (and most other skate helmets) immediately after any single high-impact crash (a hard slam), after a series of three minor impacts, or once the helmet reaches 5 to 7 years of age.
S1 Lifer Helmets are tested to protect against:
- 3 multiple low impacts in the same spot (10 mph impacts to the same spot) (4 ft drop)
- 1 high impact to the same spot (14 mph impact) (6.5 ft drop)
- 4 high impacts in different spots (14 mph impact). (6.5 ft drop)
If your slam is equal to a 14mph impact (which is a 6.5-foot drop height) your helmet has been compromised in that area of impact and it should be replaced.
You can also tell if you see stress fractures in the foam, compression zones and cracks.
