It’s that time again, the kids are home from school and you’re looking for the ultimate activity to get them off the screens and out of the house.
Less scrolling, more rolling!
If they have their own skates then there are unlimited outdoor options – try the park, the river, skate park, at the basketball courts – anywhere you can find a flat surface or path for them to roll on.
If they don’t have their own skates there are roller rinks around for everyone to enjoy and skate hire is available.
Here’s our Top 5 Places to Roller Skate this School Holidays in Perth.
1. Local Roller Rink
Coming in at number 1 is the ultimate skate destination – your local roller rink.
We are super lucky in Perth to have FOUR awesome roller rinks!
Compared to other capital cities that have considerably less than 4, some only have 1 and some have none (yes, zero).
So support your local roller rink by getting down there and having a roll.
Perth rinks, in no particular order:
Rollerways O’Connor
Rollerzone Malaga
Rollerama Kalamunda
During the school hollies most of these rinks have extended hours and are open daily for sessions but not all so please check with them before you go.
Roller rinks will generally also have a snack bar with food and drinks, bathrooms, seating areas and a water fountain.
Make sure you take socks and a fun attitude.
If you’ve never visited a roller rink before, you can expect to pay an entry fee/skate hire fee at the door.
You can hire either rollerblades (inlines) or roller skates (quads).
Don’t forget if your kids don’t like blading you can take the blades back and request roller skates instead. Give em both a try!
Most children find roller blading easier but it depends, try both out and see.
There’s also Astroskate in Kwinana which is run by the local skate club and has Friday and Saturday sessions.
2. Skate Parks
If they have their own skates you can take them to your local skate park or pump track and have an adventure.
There are loads of Skate Parks in Perth with faves such as Bayswater Skate Park, Belmont Skate Park, Mills Park Skate Plaza Beckenham, Fremantle Esplanade Youth Plaza, Port Kennedy Skate Park just to name a few.
There’s also a largely undercover skate park located in Huntingdale – the Youth Entertainment Space.
Skate parks are also home to scooters, skate boarders and BMX so choose your spot and respect your fellow skaters.
Let us know if you have any others you recommend for children!
3. Duncraig Adventure Hub
We couldn’t miss Duncraig Adventure Hub on places to skate this school holidays!
Our favourite skaters paradise with all the things – skate park, pump track, playground, BBQ facilities, basketball courts and an outdoor roller rink area.
Such a vibe and in the warmer months there is a Roller Disco aesthetic (thinks lights and music) at certain times on weekends.
Check the City of Joondalup page for the latest information on dates and times for the Disco.
The Hub is open all year though so you can go anytime and make your own fun.
4. Swan River
Skating around the Swan River is a right of passage for any roller skater or blader.
Our advice is to avoid Elizabeth Quay – the cobblestone surface is a skater’s nightmare.
Start on the South Perth Foreshore side where you have gorgeous views, smooth paths and grass to run off into.
You could skate to the Victoria Park Skate Park and Pump Track and even go over the Boorloo Bridge.
Alternatively, you can park near Optus Stadium instead and skate on and around the Matagarup Bridge.
That area is also home to the Perth Outdoor Rollerblading (POR) group every Monday night for their free local community event – Magic Moves Monday.
The event is on throughout the year – only stopping if it’s too rainy or if there’s a big stadium event.
The POR are a super friendly community group who welcome all new and experienced skaters – young and old.
Magic Moves Monday is their most beginner friendly night and family friendly too so get on down there.
5. Explore Your Neighbourhood
Check around your neighbourhood for smooth and flat surfaces.
Some examples are new paths and quiet cul-de-sacs, basketball and netball courts, around your local park, lake or river or even down by the beach.
Even some playgrounds will have smooth paths surrounding them.
Skating is one of the best activities for kids, it helps with balance, coordination and core strength.
And it’s not just physical, it’s also mentally rewarding.
Because it’s not immediately easy, it also builds resilience, goal setting and a growth mindset.
Try skating this school holidays and if they love it come in and get some of their own.
We have Kids Roller Skates and Kids Inline Skates online and in store!
