Hi there and welcome back to the land of roller-skating, more commonly known as Long Beach, California Today at Pigeon’s Roller Skate Shop, we’re going over the grit and glitter of the Luminous wheels. We’re big fans of the Luminous wheels over here and there’s a few reasons why.
To note the obvious; they’re beautiful! But even better they double as night time safety gear, and we’re all about that. Luminous wheels now come in a variety of colors and hardnesses. They even have glow-in-the-dark! 85a is best for outdoor and street cruising, and 97a is more suitable for rinks and ramps
A few things to know aboutLuminous Wheels is that each wheel requires a single generator and two bearings. Luminous wheels are sold in sets of 8 and do not come with bearings, as most wheels do not, That little guy, sittin pretty there in the middle, that’s a generator.
He’s responsible for us not having to hide a clunky battery pack somewhere. Where would we even put that?? Be sure the bearings are fully secured inside the hub of the wheel so that they make contact with the generator That’s what gives them their glow!
Most skates have long enough axles that no additional action needs to be taken. But some skates have short axles, that require you to flip the nut so that the nylon seal can keep the locknut in place.
Use your skate tool to tighten the locknut until you feel resistance, then give it a quarter turn back. You want the wheel to be able to spin freely but not click-clack back and forth,
If you’re working with a brand new lock nut, we have the perfect little hack to help the process run smoothly. Go ahead and remove the wheel and twist the lock nut completely down the axle. This gives you better leverage as you create threads
Place the wheel back on the axle. Here’s where you flip the nut! It’s important to flip the nut on a short axle so that the nylon seal can keep the lock nut in place. What are these wheels good for?! We’d say just about everything except for keeping a low profile.
Kinda hard not to notice someone with diamonds on the soles of their shoes!
